Problems - can you help?

Recommended Posts

Today is the day I had my surgery 4 weeks ago (1/5/14). I have three issues, perhaps you veterans may be able to help me?

Problem #1: Since then - I cannot get liquids in. I have a hard time getting anything in. It's painful, and I feel like there is a lump or obstruction in the back of my shoulders - centered, not in shoulders as the gas was at first, and it's all about eating/drinking. So far, I found out that you can throw up even if you haven't eaten anything but three or four spoonfuls. This feeling also tells me that I will throw up if I take even one more spoonful, and I have, which is scary and terrible since this. (3 times throwing up is almost my lifetime of throwing up, so it's weird for me.) I cannot get the suggested food in, it's viscously painful and leaves me in terrible shape for over a half hour sometimes. So - recap: not able to drink more than 24 oz. daily, and nowhere near the food suggested.

Problem #2: I have no energy. None. I mean, I have a hard time getting out of bed, and doing anything more than sitting on the couch. I only have three kids at home now, but still - three is enough for destruction, trust me. I have been swamped in laundry, the floors look like I blew up my cat and dogs, and I'm really not sure you'll stay disease-free in this house anymore. I bought the B-12 shots have sub-lingual B-12, still - to no energy. Has anyone else had this?

Problem #3: This is the most dangerous, but I now am under the care of a wound care specialist. All my surgical openings are - open. They're deep, and ghastly looking. The nurses at the hotel in TJ for Jerusalem Hospital knew, they got really nervous, then called in a superior, he came in - after rapid-fire Spanish discussion - he said, no it's fine, just go home. Don't worry. Behind him, the other two nurses were looking like they didn't agree, and motioned so. Not the most pleasant way to go home all the way to the east coast. Now - I have deep, deep open wounds, they're going to be disgustingly large and will never heal in any way other than Frankenstein. I see the would care specialist every three days, and they're still debating cutting them all open and re-stitching them for five new scars, I suppose lesser than the big open pits - but no consensus on that. At least I'm under medical care. So much for not telling anyone.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!!!!

OMG! Find a bariatric surgeon and see him/her immediately! You are in dangerous territory. If your incisions are wide open, God knows what is happening inside you. This is very scary! You need to get nutrients/fluids in, or you will end up in the hospital and very sick.

Please err on the side of caution here. This is scary!

Can't help with wounds - poor you, that sounds awful - but problems and 1 and 2 are likely to be linked.

If you aren't keeping anything down, you will have no energy and won't be able to do anything. No idea how old the kids are - can you get them to do anything to help? That aside, a little dirt never did anyone any harm ;-)

Problem 1 needs attention. By week 4, you might expect to be getting a little in and keeping it down. Have you been checked by your PCP?

Otherwise, are you actually trying to get too much in? The sensations you describe sound how I felt In the early days when I tried to eat more than I should- took me a few weeks to get the hang of how little I should be eating. Are you still on purée - perhaps you need to go back a stage to give your stomach a bit longer to recover? Do you chew everything to death, until it is a liquid in your mouth? Perhaps you need to eat little and more often?

Sorry if you have tried all these things but they are the usual starting points to try to sort the problem. But if you have tried and you are still in pain eating and still throwing up, you need to see a doc and get a medical opinion.

Good luck, let us know how you get on....

I also would get to a bariatric surgeon with the open wounds. My incisions were closed by the surgeon using surgical glue and I had no problems with. In the beginning, I was only able to get down one tablespoon of whatever soft food I was eating so maybe just cut back. As for the lack of energy, I also felt that way the first few weeks...I believe it's because of the lack of carbs in our diet. Try to get your Protein in, that might help with the energy too. Best of luck, it will get better.

I agree with the above posters. The wound issue is not normal and very troubling at 4 weeks post-op. Mine were completely closed shortly after the staples came out.

You should be able to drink fairly easily by now. I also agree that issues 1 and 2 are linked. You might want to find out if you have a stricture. My understanding is that it can be resolved quite easily with the EGD.

Good luck and please keep us updated on your progress.

wow, I am so sorry to hear all that you are going through. I am still pre-op so I can't speak from experience personally but what I can speak to is my experience as a RN. Have they tested you for a leak? I know that people can present with different symptoms in regards to a leak and it is not always 'text book'. Also, and I'm sure you know this already, but you are most likely not getting in the adequate nutrients in order to heal properly and therefore your energy is minimal and your wounds can't heal. I am very concerned for you. Do you have support of your local PCP? Can they refer you to local general surgeon for consult?

Uhm... you are being looked after by a wound care specialist right now and they haven't admitted you to a hospital for any procedures yet (ie: repair, infection prevention, etc)? And you have gaping open wounds? You need to start advocating for yourself. They either come up with a plan now or you need to find a new doctor quickly. Please keep us updated.

I was at jp 2012 and saw the same thing on a woman that had to fly back from I think Alabama d/t her insurance not wanting to touch her. She had massive infections and had wet-dry dressing changes without pre medications. she was there for weeks. and this was her 2nd time there- for a mommy makeover. It was awful and i am a nurse and was appalled at their lack of taking this seriously. I hope you get some support and let them know what happened. They ignored my calls, as "we" are to call them first prior to going to the R. I have had extensive complications and still do. Please advocate for yourself. I know you can get through this!!!

Did you rest and stay down for most of the days when you first came home? I did not leave the couch and the Dr left my butterfly bandaids over the top of the incisions and I didn't move much for the first 5-6 days. They closed up well I am 2 months post op. Get a second opinion and go see your General practitioner like tomm. You need to give your body the rest it needs to get better.

I could not get all the Fluid and Protein in, I think I still don't get everything I should in, but your stomach is tiny.

Go see your personal Dr, share your concern. Avoid any activity, have a friend come over and do some cleaning/housework for you.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
