My Journey so far.

So, I am at 9 days since surgery, there have been times that I've wished I hadn't done it. Had my surgery Monday 20th of January, it went well, was feeling great the rest of the day, was drinking/sipping Water, broth and Jello on and off got a few walks in. Tuesday came around not such a good day, doctor wanted me home after my bariatric meal test, but sadly I had a allergic reaction to Hydrocodine, itchy rash, nausea, so they change me to Oxyicodine which help me, got sent home Tuesday night. Wednesday wasn't to bad a day but come Thursday it seem I still had some ill effect of the Hydrocodine, I was covered in Hives, not fun.

Friday was my worse'd day, I was dry heaving and couldn't keep anything down, anti nausea pill wasn't doing anything. Husband phoned hospital and was sent to get some different anti nausea meds, luckily doubling up on Zofran seem to fix it, slowly since Saturday I've been feeling better. Since Monday I've managed to drink 3 Protein Shakes a day and have pudding and Soup. Though I think the pudding doesn't agree with me as usually have to visit the little room about an hour later, wondering if its a dairy issue. I'm still very sore and badly bruised, getting up can be an issue but once I am up I am ok, walking 4 / 20 minute walks a day. I am looking forward to being able to wear proper pants again instead of gym wear and sleeping on my side, that's been a big no no for some reason, I've tried and it just isn't comfy, maybe next week. Will do a weigh in soon.

I had my surgery Friday the 17th. Like you, I was allergic to the hydrocodone. I had a blister on my butt, my calf and my stomach. I had hives all over me once I got home. I told the nurses I was itching a lot. I was told some people are allergic to the powder the sheets are washed in. They didn't notice the blister on my butt, my daughter noticed it while helping me use the bathroom. The nurses said it was a pressure sore. I didn't see how because I hadn't been sitting on my butt that long lol.

My meds did get changed to morphine. I have to crush the pills because no pharmacy had liquid. I think the liquid hydrocodone helped with pain more even though I had the itching and hives.

It is painful getting up. But we have to remember we just had major surgery. I'm hunched over like a little old lady as soon as I get up and start walking lol

I also had the "why in the world did I do this" moment. I had to receive 4 units of blood while in the hospital. I couldn't get much walking in at first because of being lightheaded. My oxygen would go down if I walked much. I know why I did this... I want to be around for my family and my grandchildren. This thought is what helps motivate me. It's hard work.. But WE can do it!

It doesn't help that I'm an emotional basket case either! I've told my family to ignore me if I'm crying because most likely nothing is wrong. Lol.

It is hard to get comfy. I hate sleeping on my back. I hope you get to the point of sleeping on your side soon. I'm sure that will help so much.

Good luck with your recovery...wishing you are speedy one.

It's very common for folks to go through what I call a "buyers remorse" stage shortly after surgery. It's generally attributed to the fact that your hormones are flying all over the place. And of course it doesn't help that you're sore, grouchy, not sleeping particularly well and generally not feeling your best. Rest assured that it will pass (usually pretty quickly) and two months from now, as the pounds melt away, it will be nothing more than a distant memory!

You're doing an absolutely fantastic job - Protein, exercise - perfect! Don't forget the water!! Welcome to the forum and congratulations!

You're gonna love the new you!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
