Constant coughing a problem

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Friday, and as of Sunday, I am still coughing a lot. Sometimes it's productive and sometimes it's not, but it's keeping me awake, and making it hard for me to rest. Plus it hurts when I cough.

Is this typical? I knew they talked about the dangers of pneumonia and gave me the spirometer to breathe into, but I'm just wondering when it will go away. Other than that, things are going well for the most part.

It is actually important to cough. It is getting air back into your lungs. Now, if you feel that there might be a problem, call your surgeon's office. A good idea, when you cough, is to hold a pillow on your tummy to relieve the discomfort you will feel. But, otherwise, keep coughing! Walking round will not only move the gas around, it will put more air into your lungs, and possibly relive the cough, too! Best wishes, Karen..aka..kll724

(I am not a medical person, however)!!!

Take your temperature. Normal temp is 98.6. If you are 1 degree or more above then I would see your doctor. Also, if you are taking Tylenol, that could mask a fever. I think two days is probably OK, but if it continues definitely get in to the doc's office.

Call your doctor's office and let them know how you're doing -- they are there for you. You just want to be sure there's not something else going on I. It old and flu season. Hope you feel lots better today. The walking really helped me clear out the lungs, shrug off the anesthesia, etc. Congratulations on your recent banding!

Like everyone else has said it could be the aftereffects of surgery, gas and your body's reaction to being banded. Just to make sure everything is ok, I would definitely call your doctor tomorrow. It's probably normal but it doesn't hurt to ask, they want to be sure that everything is good also. Let us know. Hope you are feeling better today.

Thanks so much for all your advice. The cough is getting better as the day goes on, and I'm hoping that it's gone by tomorrow. But I will call the doctors office in the morning just to check and make sure.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
