what's the longest with the band

Recommended Posts

Very old thread but just found it. Nine years for me. Lost all my excess weight (109lbs) in 15 months, maintained with a few blips. Leak repaired at around 4 years out. Last fill in 2007. I ascribe the longevity of my band (when so many I know have had theirs removed) at least partly to the fact I keep it loose enough to never interfere with eating.

I have a good friend who is now 11 years post-op.

I first got my Lap Band in October 2004. I had the band replaced in October of 2009 (I think) I am now looking into getting it removed after a little over 10 years.

May I ask why you're removing it ? Thanks.

All of the healthy foods I want to eat like grilled fish and steamed broccoli for example are impossible with the lap band. This is not right. For the last few years I've been bringing food back up daily and I've basically been eating lots of smoothies at this point or unhealthy options that don't cause me any trouble. It's been getting worse. I feel that the band is causing more damage mentally and physically than it is helping me at this point. This anxiety is no way to live.

Indeed not! Sounds like you may be one of the many who find scar tissue builds up and makes the band tighter. Clearly your band is not working as it shouid and I can see why you want it out!

I have had my band for 10 years. I haven't used this forum in a very long time. Boy things really look different here! I have not had any major issues up until this point. I am thinking that I am having gallbladder issues right now though. ;)

Can you share what your symptoms are?

I have been having extreme gas & diarrhea since March/April. I eat a lot of veggies & have been under a lot of stress (grandmother with lung cancer and she passed away in April, plus 3 adopted children under 10), so I chalked it up to the stress/ maybe a little IBS. Then the pain and discomfort started. the pain started in the epigastric area. Sometimes a dull nagging discomfort, sometimes burning. The pain radiates up into my shoulders and into my chest. My heart is good so I know it's not that. Within the last week I have started having nausea. Nothing serious, just generally miserable and uncomfortable. On top of everything, my band became super duper tight when the tropical depression came through Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas a couple weeks ago. I had episodes of aspiration at night. I was also having back pain from an old back injury so I went and had a steroid shot. From working in a doctor's office for many years, I came to realize that when my band got miserably tight, I could get a steroid shot and it would take the inflammation out and I could go back to normal. It worked. My band is no longer tight & no more aspiration. YAY! But, the other symptoms are getting worse and are pretty much constant. I called my surgeon and I will see him on 7-15. I called the clinic where I used to work and they called in some Carafate and omeprazole for me. I have been on these for about a week and it has made the symptoms bearable. I didn't even think about gallbladder until I started searching through some of the posts on here. When I googled gallbladder symptoms it appears that I have every stinking one of them! Praise the Lord for this forum! I was beginning to freak out just a little. Especially since I have had my band for so long. If it gets worse I will go to the ER for sure. I am really tough, and stubborn, and a little shy so we will see. LOL!

I actually just came on to look into info about this. I was banded April 2005 and still have my original band. I have lost 65kgs give or take 6 or 7kgs. I go up and down, but get my eating back under control if my pants start getting too tight. I have to stay on top of my eating and exercise because the weight comes back on very easily.

I seem to be surrounded by anti band people at the moment. A lot of people converting or bagging the band, but I really dont have a lot of bad things to say. I mean at times I wish I didnt have to take nexium every day due to horrific reflux or the occasional blockage, but overall my band serves me very well and I will be eternally grateful for everything it has done for me or helped me do (touch wood).

In the beginning I was on forums constantly, but in the last 6 or so years I have been ...well, living. It was very suprising when I caught up with some previous band friends who all had their bands removed due to issues. They have basically told me it is inevitable that I will have issues and have the band removed, hence here I am researching again.

Who here is +10 years with a band? How are you going?

Hello all!

I have been banded since 2004 so that makes me 11 years out. I have had basically very few problems. Re flux when I was pregnant with my twins. I have also no fill since then. when I unfilled I still have restriction, but I think I am a strange case,. I can not eat fast or too much or I will get sick. I also changed my way of life. I have stayed at around 189/190 for most of the time I however did gain weight with my twins and then last year when my father was dying I put on about 20 pounds but afterwards I went to weightwatchers got back into the gym and I have been steady here ever since.

I think of the band as a tool. Its not a cure. It allows me to have some discipline when I need it. I used ww to track and make myself understand my habits. I still occasionally forget myself and have seen way to many bathrooms. But 200 plus I know I will never stay for long if I every go there again. This addiction is a life long problem for me, but I will face it head on and keep fighting.

Stay strong everyone! Fight on!

I've been banded for a little over 8 years. I've had issues the entire time, but I put up with them for the first year or so because I was losing weight. I reached goal. Had awful reflux, had to have most of the fill removed. Started gaining weight. Went to a new surgeon when I moved and found that I'd been living with a really severe slip for years. Had the band replaced. Never could reach a good restriction with the new band, so I kept gaining weight. Moved again and had to find surgeon #3. This year, I started having major reflux again after a PB/sliming session, so I had to have all the Fluid removed and apparently can't tolerate any restriction anymore. So, there's no point in me keeping the band. It's a broken tool that I can't use for its intended purpose. I just got approved for revision to RNY, and I can't wait.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
