Which Protein?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm new to this site and having my surgery on the 11. I was wondering which Protein shakes are the best out there with maximum Protein yet low in carbs and sugar.....I would really appreciate your suggestion as I'm not sure which one to go for.

Also what is the recommended grams of protein you are suppose to take with the band each day?

Thanks guys

60-80 grams is usually the recommended amount. i like powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, chike and click. the last 2 are coffee based. i like the Unjury chocolate and vanilla. go to Amazon.com they have most of all the Protein products listed. a lot of banders also use costco brand. good luck on your surgery. best wishes for a speedy recovery

As far as pre-made shakes, I liked the Ensure High Protein vanilla. I really liked those because they were larger, more to drink, during the preop phase. My fave though is the EAS strawberry Cream. Tastes just like Strawberry Quik.

Advice. Don't go crazy buying and trying stuff like I did and then find out your doc wants you to use a specific brand. Also, I bought too many and found out he wanted me to stop using them about two to three weeks after surgery.

You'll have to find out about protein from your doc. Everyone is different. Mine doesn't have an amount. He just wants me to eat protein first.

what happened to leepers happened to me too. i have bottles and packages of Protein taking up 2 shelves in my pantry. i do use them but only after a fill . once i start solid foods my Protein comes from food not drinks. so don't buy up to many until you talk with your doctor and get your orders for post op.

Congratulations on your new journey.

For shakes, I only drink chocolate. I buy Body Fortress, around $15-$20. at Walmart etc. I use 8 oz. milk (i drink almond unsweetened vanilla) 1 scoop Protein, about 1 tea-tablespoon of Decaf instant coffee and about 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract. I have a small Hamilton Beach blender (under $20.) and it is also the drinking cup and then I fill it with ice. It becomes as thick as McDonald's shakes. I have one every morning for Breakfast for over 1 1/2 years. I started a few months before I had the band to try to lose weight and it worked.

Also, every doctor is different. When I get a fill, I have shakes for 3 days, then mushie foods for 3 days and then back to my regular foods. I do fine with this recipe. Everyone has their own. I find the coffee and peppermint kill the after taste of the Protein mixture.

Good luck.

I like Paleo Protein from GNC. I had been using it prior to surgery as a protein supplement after the gym. It has a good flavor, I like the Triple chocolate, I didn't care for the Vanilla Almond as well. The only thing I have found with it is that it tends to have a lot of bubbles after I shake it, so I make it before I need it and then let it sit and settle. It runs about $34 for a large jug. It has 21 grams of protein 0 sugar and 120 calories and you mix with Water. 28 servings so pretty reasonable per serving.

I like Isopure and Unjury. My surgeon also prefers that you stop the Protein Drinks a few weeks postop. He says if you still need to supplement your Protein intake after a few weeks that he prefers you use Protein Bars rather than shakes because they stay with you longer.

I still use the costco Premier liquid Protein chocolate shakes. I know most doctors want to wean you off the liquids, it's easier for me to drink a shake and get my Protein. After every fill I stay on liquid shakes for 2 days then start with mushy foods.

Best wishes and Keep the Faith.

i don't use liquid drinks, I mix my own with powder and the blender. I, also, add ice or frozen strawberries to make it more like the smoothies you get out. (Even when I was just starting, I alwys used the blender becsue my surgeon's office had us using Chike powder)! Best wishes, Karen..aka.kll724

I drink a Protein shake every morning. I apparently cannot tolerate the whey-based powders on a daily basis. I have a dairy allergy that causes me to break out in hives when I've had too much. I had too much using the unjury powders (very yummy, btw) after my surgery. My nutritionist and I quickly decided that I needed another Protein. So, I use egg protein. I really, really like the GNC Pro Performance Egg Protein. I tried a few brands...and took them back each time before settling on the GNC brand. I use the chocolate flavor and add powdered Peanut Butter...it's like drinking a Peanut Butter cup each morning :)

Good luck to you! Keep us posted on your progress. I have learned a lot of valuable information from the people on this site!

I've been using pea Protein and that worked well for me pre-surgery but then afterwards I didn't want any kind of Protein Shake for a month or so. Recently I've been having one for late Breakfast and I think that's going to be my mode. I had some Muscle Milk leftover from the stash of stuff I got and didn't need (guess we all do this!) and the vanilla mixed with frozen peaches or strawberries was like sorbet. Absolutely delicious. I am going to try the egg protein -- thanks for that recommendation. I don't do a lot of dairy. Oh, also I have been putting psyllium in my shake, and sometimes ground flax seeds. Need that digestive help.

During Pre-Op and after fills I use the Nector chocolate Truffle Protien shakes. You can buy them at the viatmin shoppe or online. For 1 full scoup (serving size) has 23g of protien, only 25 cal., 0 sugar and 0 carbs. I mixed this with about 8 oz of Water and then would place it in the freezer so it would get slushy:-) Very good and 3 of these a day will get you into the recommended Protein range. Congrats on the start of you journey!!

Oops correction it has 100 cal. per full scoup, not 25.

When I first began this journey, I started out with whey Protein chocolate flavor $15.98 at Walmart because I love chocolate. After a year or so into this weight loss thing, my taste buds changed so I now purchase the strawberry flavor still Whey Protein. I only make a shake for breakfast when I'm not really hungry and just want to get some protein in. Most of my protein on a daily basis comes from food as well. Congratulations and good luck to a healthier new you.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
