Pasta and Rice?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of you vets eat Pasta and/or rice and how far along in the healing process it took you to begin eating it again. I completely understand that I won't be successful without consuming Protein first, then greens, and carbs last. However, I'm hoping to be able to enjoy pasta/rice again on a very limited basis.

I also understand that I perhaps won't be able to tolerate pasta/rice at all after surgery. Just wanted to get some opinions.

Pasta, rice and bread were weaknesses for me so I dont partake at all now. I CAN tolerate them, I just CHOOSE to make better decisions on what to put in my tiny tummy. Im so concerned with getting in all my Protein that I usually never have enough room to put any Pasta, rice or bread in my tummy. If I do end up with a little room left I will typically eat a veggie instead of a carb.

i ate some rice pudding yesterday (90cal, 5g) and felt fine but have opted to not have anymore because it has carbs and i am in my losing phase right now.

i've been looking for substitutes because i love Pasta and rice and i don't know if i can help myself with them.

if u google ''cauliflower rice'' you'll find a recipe. i haven't tried it yet b/c i am still on full liquids but it looks good and some of the comments i read under the recipe said that when u cook it w/other stuff like gen tso chicken or beef and salsa it gives u the same feel and taste of rice.

as for Pasta. i found a recipe for zucchini fettucine w/a creamy squash sauce that looks good. nice and cheesy. same for zucchini lasagna

Pasta and rice are poor food choices when you can only each about 4 ounces of food and be full. Your much better off eating 2 to 3 ounces of Protein and topping the rest of the meal off with a nice vegetable.

I don't do rice, Pasta or bread. With the exception of my eating 3 inches of a roasted chicken sub at subway once a week for a treat.

I'm one year out. I eat sushi w/brown rice and I love quinoa salad (made w/quonoa, red & brown rice, sliced almonds, and dried cranberries). I don't eat either very often. Mainly I concentrate on getting Protein, Water and Vitamins.< /p>

I will be the devil's advocate and say that some carbs should be eaten. Yes, we need to focus on mostly Protein, however our bodies NEED carbs for organ function, brain function, normal metobolic cycle and more. obviously the GOOD quality carbs are the best option, whole grain, with high Fiber. I use Barilla Plus and Dreamfields.

my surgeon and nut have built a long standing program (and highly successful) and actually have soft Pasta included, starting at the softs phase. the other night my family had spaghetti. i had 1/3 cup meat sauce with about 5-6 spaghetti strands broken into small pieces in it. I felt awesome because i was eating the same thing they were and there was no deprivation whatsoever.

I see my WLS as a tool to help me gain control of portions and my eating. if i had wanted to just eat Protein only for the rest of my life I would have done Atkins and skipped the anesthesia. and the bill!

Ihave found shritaki (tofu) noodles to be good subs for pastas and I ,

Make fake rice using cauliflower (go google for other subs)

Everyone is different, because no two bands are exactly alike in terms of adjustments and how ones body reacts to those adjustments.....

For me, the first thing to go was rice...thought I would have some sushi....No mas!

Then it was bread, and eventually all things made from flour...rolls, cakes, Pasta, etc...that also took care of pizza once and for all...I cannot tolerate big globs of meted cheese....things that are deep fried and crunchy....and eventually red meat, which I gave up.....chicken is hit and miss, it has to be very tender and most places when eating out overcook it or it is just old....

However...it does not bother me..as a matter of fact I find it a blessing...looking at the things that I do not eat, almost none of it is very nutritional....or not good for you in general.

My Dr.'s have been trying to get me to stop eating red meat, or at least cut it back to once a week...same with all those Desserts....

So the band has FORCED me to become more food conscious, seeking out the best foods out there..natural, organic....I have become a real "Health Nut"

And it's all because of the Band...I would, and could not, do this on my own....but I do not have a single regret...quite the opposite.

I had my RNY surgery almost 4 months ago. I have tried like a few bites of rice and I didn't like it. I have had a few pieces of bread with my Soup and felt it was too heavy for me. I have had like a few super thin slices of pizza and it was hard to get it down. And I had a few bites of spiral Pasta and it didn't sit well. So I have pretty much given up on trying bread pasta and rice and honestly I don't even care for it nor do I miss it. As far as sweets go, I have like maybe a small scoop of ice cream which is rare or have a bite of cake from my friend at a baby shower I went to and it just didn't feel right. So I stay away from it and I don't even miss it. I think we get used to not having this stuff in our system and we don't even want it anymore. Hope this helps!

I can tolerate it, somewhat. But in 9 months the only thing that made me feel like I was going to throw it up was a couple of bites of risotto (rice). Mostly it's not worth it, and I don't even really crave it. I do like rice in sushi rolls, in small amounts.

I'm Thai, and rice is like bread for Thai cuisine but I think I overate rice per meal made me gain weight so fast. So during the pre-op I ate rice very little only for Breakfast or lunch but not for dinner and it worked so well.

Now I'm 5 weeks out on soft food and I started to have congee with soft fish and veggie (2 tbs of Congee) for Breakfast and it works well. I found I have to change food types after 1 or 2 days stall and eating food with Asian seasoning is heaven! I added some ginger, sesame oil, soja sauce for the flavour but carefully enough for sodium intakes.

I ate Pasta once and I had bad bad bad reflux laster so, no Pasta for me, I think for a long long time!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
