So for those 100+lbs overweight and with T2 diabetes has your sleeve...

1) Allowed you to get off oral meds?

2) Allowed you to eliminate Insulin injections?

I met with my surgeon and he strongly recommended RNY/Bypass based on my diabetes instead of the sleeve. Now I am not sure how unbiased his opinion is as he is a RNY specialist. Right now 80% ($26,000) of his surgeries are RNY with the other 20%($18,000) sleeves. He does not do lap bands as he feels the weight regain happens too much and doesn't support that anymore.

So the raging debate in my household is RNY versus Sleeve based on eliminating diabetes and maybe eliminating my super high blood pressure. Truly this is for the health-medical improvement. I have until Thursday to change my mind to RNY instead of sleeve.

Please chime in your opinion.

I have had T2 for about 15 years and was on oral meds. May of 2012, I was put on injected insulin because things got out of control. I was sleeved on Sept. 20 - my numbers are technically still high and I will probably end up back on oral meds, but my surgeon said not to worry about it until 6 months out. If I get too high, I'm to take fast acting insulin on a sliding scale as needed. I've lost about 50 lbs since surgery and notice the side effects of diabeties have all but gone away - thirst, frequent urination, etc... If I could do the sleeve over again, I would 10 more times!

There are other things to consider with each of your options - not just diabeties. With the RNY, you don't absorb calories, but you don't absorb nutrients either. The weight loss will happen very quickly, but if you're not careful, you could have long term problems other than diabeties. With the sleeve, the weight comes of slower. You still need to make sure you're extremely careful with what and how you eat, but there's less problems. As far as the diabeties, I'm fully prepared to go back on oral meds. Hoping I won't have to, but preparing myself for it nonetheless.

Not sure if anything I'm saying will help... It's just my opinion.

And, I am currently off all other meds - blood pressure, heartburn, oral diabeties (along with the injected), etc.... Will probably not go back on anything but the oral diabeties meds.

I'm type one and barely take insulin , a few units a few days a week. I keep my carbs extremely low and follow the high protein concept. I was sleeved 7-2012 and down 92 pounds.

The peer-reviewed medical journals have published significan research that does indicate that the weight loss is similar between RNY and the sleeve, RNY is hands-down the winner for the "serious" diabetic - in part due to the re-plumbing process. Your surgeon is making a recommendation that is in keeping with bariatric surgery guidelines and the Bariatric Centers of Excellence.

I've been a diabetic for 4 1/2 years - insulin dependent, sleeved in July, my sugar's changed immediately, I have not taken insulin since my surgery which is a huge blessing. Though my diabetes is basically gone, I'm severely struggling to lose the weight.

I have been diabetic since 2004 & I also have a very strong family history of diabetes in my family on ky dads side. At first they out me on oills but I was too stubburn & refused to accept I was diabetic so didn't take long to end up on insulin which for the oast 4 years I was on 200 units a day plus janumwt plus invokana (might have spelled it wrong, sorry) so I was dosed up pretty high on diabetic meds & now at almost 5 mths out I have not had to take anything at all. Hope this helps you some but also always keep in mind that everyone's progress & outcomes are all different regardkess of which choice you make on which surgery to get. I am also T2, since 2008, and pre-op, I was on 3 different oral meds, and still could not keep my sugars down low enough, ranging between 130-150 and sometimes higher, even tho I pretty much stuck to a low carb diet. When doing the research to make this decision for myself, I learned that the stats for eliminating T2 was 80% chance with sleeve and 90% chance with RNY. But, with RNY comes so many more complications, and you are under anethesia for 4 hours, approximately, where as with the sleeve, as someone else mentioned, you have better absorption of nutrients (important to me) less complications because your intestines are not rerouted, and you are in surgery for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your surgeons skill set. I also learned from my own surgery that my doctor has major skills, as she did not cut into any muscle, but it was explained to me that she goes between the fibers of the muscles and my pain was nearly nonexistent! That was an amazing surprise! Less skilled surgeons will cut thru the muscles and increase your healing time and pain levels greatly.

OK, now let me speak to my personal results as to my T2. When I was released from the hospital, I still was on 2 of my oral meds, but one was dropped. About 3 weeks into recovery, another med was dropped. So, now I am still on one med, 2X per day, and for the past 3 weeks my sugars have been between 80 and 99 every single morning! I feel so much better, I can't tell you, and even if I have to remain on the one med, I am OK with that. But, I am told that as I lose weight, that slowly I can be weaned off the last med. That is so exciting to me! I also must mention that I am a hard core case, as in my situation it is genetic, passed on from generation to generation for several, and so the doctors have said it will be harder in the long run to keep me off meds, but if I am careful with my diet, I should be fine in the long term.

Sometimes I think to myself that perhaps I should have gone the RNY route, but really, the sleeve for me has been so easy, for the most part, and I am only 2 months out. I have been healing pretty well, and tho I do have my issues as so many of us do, I think the diabetic question will resolve itself as I give it more time.

In the end, you will have to make the decision that you feel most comfortable with. Whatever you decide, I wish you the very best in care and health!

Sleeve is my choice. In a worst case scenario I can revise to RNY or DS later if necessary.

I'm T2 diabetic for 6 yrs, was on orals x2 daily and hbp as well.

When I met surgeon I went in wanting the lapband, he suggest the sleeve due to diabetes.

My surgery was 11/14/13 weighing 266, today 239, as soon as I starred my pre-op 2 wks liquids, my bs daily were from 80 to 129. Pcp asked me to stop orals for diabetes, 3wks post-op and still off diabetes meds and hbp. I went to see my pcp on Tuesday to find out if I'm still a diabetic but she asked me to wait until 2 more wks for blood lbs and will know by then then. Currently my bs upon waking up have been from 80 to 128, one morning only was 180 idk why. Overall I'm glad my surgeon suggested the sleeve, I have faith my diabetes will be gone with the WL.

Do your research and go with what you feel is best for you and your health. We are all unique so what's changed for some, may not be the case for others. Best to discuss with your doctor.

Good luck, which ever one you go with, you will still be successful and healthier in the long run.
