Band Hasn't Worked For 5 Yrs....thinking Of Removing

Recommended Posts

Hddn- to answer both your questions, first as for psychological trauma from the band I think my surgeon was speaking about how hard it can be to adjust the band and how frustrating or is trying to manage the band especially when it isn't going well. I definitely feel like I have suffered for the past five out of seven years. With the band. As for the feeling of tightness with the band after a fill, I always felt it was full enough of if could drink little sips without feeling like the Water was just sitting there. Best of luck to you in your journey.

Tmf- actually my first surgeon that did the band and re band was a money Gruber as you put it. My current surgeon is the top in the state and I'm sure her stats reflect a higher percent of band failures because she sees many patients looking for second opinions after their original surgeons don't take them seriously. Current research shows a 25% re surgery rate with the band. that's fact. I have said my peace and won't be responding on this section again. Best wishes to you all.Thank you for wishing me well on my surgery. Three weeks. I can't wait to be band-free!

Good luck on your revision. I hope you are well versed in the Sleeved Life. It is an adjustment. Worthwhile but definitely an adjustment.

If I can answer any questions or offer any support, plz let me know.

Uh, sorry, it's not a fact. It's your opinion. You're entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. I'm sure someone could dig up some study and manipulate the stats to make it appear this is the case but I can also pull up a study that states less than 10% revisions in the last 8 years.

But, I do believe strongly in the sleeve and RNY too. I think both are excellent choices and hope you find much success with your new journey.

my opinion is If you were banded and for whatever reason you were unsuccessful in losing all the weight that you needed to lose, having the band removed and revising to another weight loss surgery is one's own preference. whether you've failed the band or it failed you, as it was mentioned, everyone is different. There is no need to shut the gate after the horse gets out.

Well, Tuesday evening I went to the ER with severe abdominal pain and finally found out that the past 3 cat scans I had revealed that there was a disconnected from my band to the port and the pain I had been experiencing since Thanksgiving was most likely caused by the tubing moving around in my stomach. I was enraged that Kaiser didn't mention this once but in the cat-scan report was indicated each time.....so Wednesday I had an emergency surgery and the band was removed. I'm a little disappointed since I was told that I'd have it forever but at the same time this surgeon said they are not permanent and he's seen so many cases go wrong...so I guess now I'm more relieved than anything. The pain on a scale from 1-10 was 20. I truly thought I was going to die.. now my weight loss will solely be from disciplining myself and exercising. I never want to experience something like that again. :(

Aww Crystal T....Sorry to hear you went thru so much pain and had to have surgery... I hope you get healed soon, and who knows what life has in store for you. Just take it one day at a time.

@Lady VS...thanks for asking. I did not do very well on the foods, etc...but, I am back on the wagon, I have been going to the Y and walking/biking 3 times a week. Seeing a few pounds down. They have scheduled my psych evaluation for January 30th. I have to get in 5 NUT classes, should have done by Feb 10th. When all behind me, we can request the RNY bypass surgery again thru my insurance. So, one day at a time, I will use my fitness pal to help.

I see you are almost to goal! Way to go....I can't imagine being that close. It has been years since I was even close to normal weight. What exercising routine do you use? Hope your holidays were good as well.

Thanks for responding. I'm actually below goal. You read the ticker wrong lol. I do not exercise as I have osteoarthritis very bad. I just stick to 4 oz of food at a time and that's it. Good luck with your revision surgery.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
