My surgery is next week and I just wondering about something. My dietician said to stay away from sticky rice as in sushi. Does that mean forever? I think that sushi is the best thing on the planet so I would be sad to see it go. I understand if it would be awhile before my stomach could handle the rice but I'm hoping down the road a few pieces would be ok. There is always sashimi which will be fine I assume. Anybody have experience with sushi?

Omg!! The one thing I miss most is sushi. I am 5 weeks post op. I saw my NUT last week. I am on soft foods and she said rice is on the allowed list, but to proceed with caution. Rice is small, so how much actually gets chewed and how much just goes down whole? Personally I am trying to hold off on adding back in much carbs like bread rice and Pasta. I have thought about just ordering a roll without rice, but I just don't think it will be the same. A place I like does offer brown rice as an option, so once I try it I will probably go with that. I plan to wait until I am cleared for regular foods. That's in 3 more weeks.

I'm a year out and ate sushi not too long ago. I haven't heard anything about not being able to eat it forever. I wonder if anyone else has!

I eat sushi, I just order rolls without the rice. I don't notice the difference.

Sushi is my favorite food!!! I had it before my pre op. It's just amazing to me!! I hope I still enjoin it as much as I do now after I'm sleeved.

I never thought that I would have to give up sushi! This is worse than giving up beer and diet Coke!

Why can't you guys have sushi with no rice? Or sashimi? Or the nori wraps with no rice?

Skinny rolls ( no rice) or sashimi are my best of friends!

How are y'all doing on this? Has anyone ate plain sushi with sticky rice? I've got a craving!

It seems like the sticky rice might get stuck... and the way pills get stuck in me, I'm not going near sticky rice. But boy, it sounds great and think how cheap! One roll and I'm good for the day...

I'm 7 weeks out, and I actually ate sushi last night. I took about half the rice off each piece, and was only able to eat 4 small pieces of a roll. (The roll was 12 pieces) it was the best thing I've eaten in 9 weeks. ;)

Good that gives me something to look forward to. I can't have it now cuz I'm only 10 days post op, but it sounds sooo good. It's good to know you didn't have any problems with it. I'm sleeved and haven had any issues with things getting stuck yet (knock on wood). Have y'all had HEB's (I dunno if HEB is just a Texas thing) sushi? It is awesome and cheap.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
