Nervous about upcoming RNY surgery!

Recommended Posts

Praying for you' date=' Janifer. Are you and your husband each having surgery on the same day? My husband and I are both wanting to have it and starting with all of the testing and insurance requirements, but I never gave much thought to how we would actually schedule the surgeries for each of us.[/quote']

Thank you for prayers, as I will pray for you and your Husband. My Husband and I are scheduled on the same day 11-11-13, I am going first then him. I start my pre-op diet Monday I have to do mine for two weeks and he has to do only one week pre-op. We are fortunate to have the support of our Family, therefore we are able to do this together at the same time. Please keep me posted on your journey.

Sending Prayers to everyone that has upcoming surgeries and for quick recoveries. I am just starting the process and hope I will be able to have surgery sooner rather than later but I am scared but know it is something I have to do if I want to live.

Thank you for your prayers and support. I too will pray that you have great success on this new adventure to life!

This is normal of any life altering circumstance. Don't do this to yourself' date=' you made the decision to make a healthy change. Please don't be afraid of being better. Envision want is ahead of you and go for it, you know you want it. Staying where you're at is unhealthy and not satisfying; if it was you would have never sought out help.

We are with you. Each one of us will or have gone this way and will/came out just fine. Fear, fear itself. Not a happier and fulfilling life. This is your time please take full advantage of this opportunity you have been blessed with. Blessings....[/quote']

Thank you so very much for your words of encouragement as well as your motivational talent. Absolutely wonderful your words have been taking to heart. Your kindness will not be forgotten. Many blessings to you.

I 32 days away from surgery and as it gets closer and closer I'm getting more nervous. I've been eating like crazy! I know this is what I need for a healthier life but what if it doesn't work? What if I have serious complications? What if????? That goes thru my mind often. Other times I feel excited about this. I feel that my quality of life will be so much better once I lose this weight. I look at all the pictures I can of anyone with my body type and that was my size trying to imagine what I will look like. Will I need plastic surgery in 2 years? Will I look too thin? I worry I will lose too much weight. I just worry about anything and everything at times. Change is very scary for me.

I will pray for you and your family' date=' please do the same for me.[/quote']

Thank you for your prayers and response. I too think of all the same questions but with the great support from everyone here on this forum as well as their knowledge I feel all will be fine. May you have the same peace of mind. Wishing you much success!

I understand completely. My life has been halted by my weight. My kids are growing and experiencing life while I'm sitting on the sidelines. Having surgery terrifies me. I've never had surgery but I see the worst case scenarios everyday at work. I have faith that this surgery will give me the full life I deserve. Have faith and know that you will be ok. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Please keep me in yours. <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thank you for sharing and your words of faith, and prayers. It means so much as we all go through this time in our life. I will keep you in my prayers as well.

I completely understand where you're coming from...I have been excited' date=' impatient, nervous and even scared at times! I put this surgery off for a few years because I was scared of the horror stories I had heard, but then one day I looked at my little girl and realized that I had to do it not only for me but her too...I couldn't take her to the park or go outside for a walk with her or anything because I was trapped in the prison that was my body...but even worse than that were all the health problems that came with it. So I thought...ok...if I don't have the surgery I am going to die probably within the next 5 years...and if I have the surgery yes there is always risks, but I will at least get a shot at living a healthy, active life!! The odds are pretty good that we will do great and it will all be worth it in the end!! I will pray for you and your husband...I am having my surgery on 10/29...please pray for me too!

Hi Janifer!

Just wanted to give you an update...I had my surgery on 10/29. I had quite a bit of pain for the first 24 hours or so until they finally was able to manage it with the correct pain meds. They said that since I have chronic back pain and I am on daily pain meds already, that the normal pain meds that they give someone coming out of surgery was not working for me. They adjusted everything though and got the pain tolerable. So after that, I only had to stay 2 nights and once I could tolerate full liquids they let me go home. I went through my first week with full liquids ok. I did get very emotional for a few days starting on the Saturday after my surgery. That was a little rough, but it seemed to last about 3 days and then I was ok. Now I'm just in the middle of my 2nd week and I am able to eat puréed food. That was exciting! I've never really cared too much for refried Beans, but let me tell ya, those beans with some melted reduced fat cheese and just a little scoop of Greek yogurt tasted amazing that first day!! Everyday things are getting better and better and I'm so glad that I made the decision that I made! I wouldn't change it for nothing in the world!

So how are you doing? Hope everything is well with you!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
