Pros and cons six and a half weeks after surgery

Recommended Posts

Came out of WW May 2013. Was a helper. Loved meeting people but no good for my weight. When I left I weighed 392.

During the summer months I looked at my options, said enough is enough, and went for sleeve surgery on 09/18. I weighed in at 365.

Since surgery I've lost 33 pounds and I feel great. So I thought I would share my pros and cons.

Pros

I am losing weight almost effortlessly.

I am not hungry.

Sometimes I crave a food but it passes.

Fitting back into clothes I couldn't wear.

My knees don't hurt anymore.

My feet and lower legs are not swollen anymore.

I don't leak urine when I cough or sneeze.(Major bonus, haha).

I can put on my socks and shoes with no problem.

If I drop something on the floor I can pick it up.

My BP meds are down from 7 per day to 1.(Another major bonus).

I feel better, happier and healthier.

Cons

I have to remind myself to chew slowly.

Still struggling with my Water intake.

Food has lost some of its appeal. (Although this could be a pro as well!)

For me the pros far outweigh the cons. I am under no illusions that this will be a tough journey . But the doctor has done his job and the rest is up to me. I intend to succeed. This has been the best money I've ever spent (self pay) and I will never regret it.

Good luck to everyone out there who has made the decision to have the surgery.

Look out life here I come!!

Congratulations on your success so far :-)

As far as the pros, I can also relate to many of them, and the cons, I don't just have to remind myself to chew slowly, but I also have to remind myself to sip. Sip, sip. I hate sipping and over chewing, but like you said, the positives of this outweigh the negative.

What I found is easier for me is to take a big or "normal" sip out of something, and keep it in my mouth and slowly swallow lol. It helps me a lot.

Ohhh the eating slow is a hard one to me too, but the pros outweigh the cons 9,999,999:1!! I love losing weight and even if I don't make the right food choices I can't scarf down a ton of it. That's a huge pro!

Great job! Best thing I have ever done too! It is good for those in the middle stages, some maybe experiencing a stall to sit back and remember why they did it, where they came from and also where they are going. It is hard, definately not easy at all, BUT as you said, the pros def outweigh the cons by a mile!

Keep it up!

I find that I also do that with drinking: I will take a "large" (not really, but normal) sip, and then slowly swallow it. It helps me with getting less air in my tummy. All that "sipping" added a lot of air!

The choice to become healthy is a empowering feeling combined with losing at a pace you can see with results (fast ones) that we can see right away. I'm not sure about everyone else but I always got discouraged if I didn't see results the next day! I was always so impatient for my weight to be gone. The pros soooo outweigh the cons any day here!! At 10 weeks out sipping is a thing of the past. :) so It get better lol Your doing fantastic!! Keep on chugging alone there's no where to go but down. (I mean that in the best since possible as in the scale) :)

I too did the mouthful and the small drinks. Told my NUT that after she asked if I was gulping Water already. Is not really a gulp if I let it trickle HA

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
