"starting their period"??? REALLY????? LOL. Auto correct!

Starting their PREOP!

<Whew> I'm SO glad you followed up on that post (I was actually waiting to see if you would). I was thinking when I originally read it..."wow...that escalated fast..." LOL...but figured, hey we're all friends, perhaps we need to encourage each other during that 'time'.

Thank you autocorrect...you continue to provide hours and hours of reading enjoyment!

Thanks for the giggle today! :D

December 20th at Obesity Control Center. Was originally shooting for January, but work schedule allowed for an earlier date. Nothing like ruining the holidays with a surgery :) but I've spent MONTHS researching and planning and I'm ready to Git er dun! Hopefully my excitement can carry me through the pre op diet without strangling anyone.

Hi, I'm Elizabeth and hope to confirm my December date soon. Going for all my pre-op testing this week so it will be a busy time! Look forward to having some friends here to chat with along the way.

It's funny, but I have been going through the process for most of this year to prepare for the surgery and get through all the pre approval process, which is now done. Yet it was today that I finally told my mother that I was doing this. I wasn't going to tell her (lots of family drama) but I'm glad I did now. She is supportive and wants to be with me so I'm feeling good about that.

Anyway, hello everyone!

Hi! My name is Robin. I'm 5'5 and 300 pds. My goal weight is between 140-150 pds. I am soo happy to be able to say I have a scheduled date!! I'm due to be operated on Dec 16th. My doctor is Dr. Yatco at Lenox Hill Hospital in Nyc. I have a few tests to complete which should be done after tomorrow with my primary doctor and then I meet with the surgeon on the 20th. I'm excited and nervous. I love reading about other people's successes and drawbacks. I've been going to youtube increasingly these days to follow other people's video journeys as well. I think it's a great resource.

Welcome Everybody!!

Hi Robin! You and I share similar stats! It will be neat going through this together! I am 5"4 and about 306. I would also hope to get to about 145 (have no recollection of being that weight so I have NO idea what that would be like but I'm excited to find out!!)

Welcome to the group! My surgery date is the 13th

I don't have a weight loss goal before surgery either. The 14 day pre-op is to make sure you've reduced the glycogen in your liver so that it is as small as possible because it sits above the stomach. At least that is how the doctor explained to me.

In additon, I was told to make sure I am careful with my weight not for the surgery but because of my BMI. Since my BMI was under 50, but only by 2 points, gaining weight will put me at 50 or above and that would require I have the pulmonary tests and that could set my surgery back a month or two, until I under went those tests. . Not sure if anyone else falls in this same category, but becareful, just in case.

my BMI is over 50, but my doctor isn't having me do any pulmonary tests. Then it seems every doctor is different.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
