Any one get the blues for no apparent reason after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, I'm 5 weeks post op and for the past two weeks about one or two days each week, I just get the blues for no apparent reason. I'm a very upbeat person and am very happy with my life so it's just weird for me to feel these blues. Any one else experience this?

Im on the same page! Got mine 3 months ago and feel the blues often! That's why I started looking online for a lap band magazine for motivation by seeing other people's stories and found this forum! Feeling very positive since!

From what I have read, this is very common. Whether it is the lifestyle change or a result of the trauma of surgery I don't know. I know there are times I get frustrated because I can't misuse food to deal with stress or emotional issues and I have to look for alternate methods of dealing.

Its called surgical depression. It will pass. Everything is out of sorts now. Hope you feel better soon.

If food has been a go-to soother for a long time and is no longer available, it makes sense there would be a time of emotional transitioning. Pain medication takes it's toll as well -- body needs to rebalance from so many things. The pre-op diet, reduced calorie intake, the surgery itself -- main thing is to really be noticing the feelings and not just eating over them. I'm not banded yet but I am very aware of light changes at this time of year and I'm careful to get plenty of Vitamin D. It's a tiny capsule for 10,000 (not a typo) and I'm so glad as I will be able to keep taking it if needed. Unlike the Calcium I currently take -- huge. Can barely do it now pre-band!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
