1 Week Out Gastric Sleeve Plication Surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm surprised he's doing plications given what he wrote here http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/14816-gps-update-important-new-information/page__p__125871#entry125871

I paid 9,900 with Dr. Brad Watkins in Cincinnati Ohio. I was his 50 patient for plication of course he does many other WLS. I have two years of f/u and a "free" barium if I need it.

I was only on "clear liquids" for a couple days. Then I went to Soups, yogurt, pudding, & Jello. I guess I just went on the fast track and now am totally tired of this food!!! Since you had your surgery in Mexico, how do you have your check ups? I had to go back the day after & week after my surgery. I also have to now go back at my 2 week because my stomach is still a little swollen and irritated. It is weird to see my innards and my new stomach in scans. In some places my stomach is only about an inch wide! That is why my Dr says I can't go to mushy foods yet. She said that's where my swollen stomach is pushing into my sleeve, so I would have the potential of getting blockage and throwing up.

Is it unrealistic to have a list of foods I want to eat when I can eat real food again? Of course most are from restaurants, but I am just SOOO sick of Soup & Protein shakes! My husband made Tofurkey Italian sausages for his dinner and I chewed a small piece then spit it out ;)

I was on Clear liquids for one week and then full liquids for a second week (ie anything you can drink through a straw). So Soup and milk were on the menu in week 2. I got to go on mushies at week 3.

I've not had any complications and haven't needed any checkups. I knew that by going to Mexico I'd be on my own post op.

And yes it's completely normal to have a list of foods you want to eat. Scrambled eggs were the first thing I had when I got to two weeks and was permitted to have them. I'm guessing that my doc took the cautious approach about re-introducing foods as he knew that I couldn't afford to have any issues being as I was going back to a different continent shortly post op.

I started on soft foods about 1 1/2 in. I knew it was a bit early, but I was dying to chew. My stomach is pretty little. I can't eat a whole lot which is the point I guess. I am just about 3 weeks out and am still eating "softer" foods, but last night I had a maybe one ounce piece or rib eye. I cut it into small pieces and chewed it to death. No issues. The Protein Shakes are wearing me down. I like the EA low carb brand which only has about 100 calories, so I will drink those for Breakfast until I can't stand it anymore. I am trying to get the 60g of Protein in my diet , but so far it is about 40g per day.

Cottage cheese is a good source of protein. carbmaster yogurt from kroger has low cal and good protein too.

He was very honest about his two complication patients in fact he is writing a medical journal article on what happened. He told me that he found that the plication had to be looser then the sleeve. He tried to make them tight like the VSG. I appreciated his honesty and the hard stop he did to further research. He is doing them again. So far I have not had any problems.

One of the surgeons at the clinic I went to, told me about that Dr! He said said they all got together and discussed it! He wouldn't tell me the Dr's name, so it's funny that it came up :). Yeah, it was definitely 2 patients!

Total, 26.8! I don't see it either, except, my rings are a little big. But all my clothes still fit. I don't have any preop weight, because there was no preop diet.

Yeah, all my clothes still fit too! I can't wait until I really start seeing a difference! Granted I'm bound to lose weight when I can't eat ;). After this, I'm not sure that I will ever have Soup or Protein Shakes again! The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the buying of new clothes. I am one of the few woman who doesn't like shopping, so the thought of having to get lots of clothes as I lose weight is horrible! I need a personal shopper ;-)

I had heard that he says that patients that go to other countries for their surgeries need to be punished. I heard that he charges like 5 times the amount for fills for patients who had their band or banded/plication done in another country, in order to 'punish' them. Not sure if that's true (as I don't have a band and have never even talked to his office) but some people on another board were talking about it.

Great! It is exciting. Keep it up we are all rooting for you!

I would love to keep this pace up, but I know it will slow. That is OK, I will enjoy it while I can.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
