December Surgeries!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

I just got my surgery date for 12/19. I'm a little conflicted because it wipes out Christmas and our vacation, but if I waited longer, it would wipe out all my vacation time for 2014 instead of taking advantage of 2013 vacation time and company shutdown at year end. But I feel bad that it cancels our vacation, and we'll be alone for Christmas. We have a big family wedding on Feb 1, so I also wanted to be strong enough to go to that, especially since my parents are flying up for it. My alternate date was 12/30, but that would mean spending New Years eve in the hospital, and I'd be more worried about those "what did I just do?" thoughts taking me into the new year. Bleh, I'm lying awake thinking about it! Oh, and pre-op diet starts Wednesday: slim fast for Breakfast and lunch (any suggestions for good ones?), a Lean Cuisine for dinner, and string cheese for 2 Snacks. Seems doable (although monotonous, but I can certainly deal).

I just found out late last week that my insurance approved my surgery and I now have a date of December 26th. I am really excited and also kinda freaked out. Originally I was supposed to have the sleeve but my surgeon called me last week and decided that the bypass would be the better surgery because of some other health issues that I have. I didn't think it was going to happen this quickly. My insurance is dropping me at the end of December and I will have new insurance by January 1st but they just seemed to be dragging their feet in approving me just so time would run out and they wouldn't have to pay. I was flabbergasted when the nurse telephoned me and said I was approved. If I wait and do it through my newer insurance it will be $4,0000 out of my pocket. So I'm on the schedule for the 26th. All I can say is I am grateful but scared.

Each day I wake up, I pee, I dress down if not already in my birthday suit, I get on the scale, I take a deep breath in, I let it all out. I wait 10 seconds and just "embrace" the moment....I look down and I SMILE (most days). I am losing weight slowly and daily with my pre-surgery diet. This low carb stuff is working! I used to think it was for the birds....but that's cuz I wasn't ready to treat myself to this gift.........this gift of surgery.....a new life. 9 days to go until surgery. I have my head really in the game this time. I have done some amazing mental and behavior changes this time. It's real. I am so happy and proud. If you feel the same, take a moment to wrap your arms around yourself and hug yourself from me. If you are having a rough day, just remember that each day is a new day........if you are in search of a new start......take it.....it can happen each day, anytime of day. If you are off track, just get back ON TRACK. Don't mess up the rest of the day just because you may have fallen into the trap......step right back on the wild ride and go for it. WE CAN DO THIS!!!!

Thank you for your words. I feel better everyday about my decision. I can't believe how much weight I am losing during this pre-op time. Barely any hunger and it is good practice! I am feeling really clear headed and calm.

We have same surgery date!

I am having gastric bypass too.

Also I am in same situation with insurance costs going way up in January.

Good luck and knew you are not alone in this journey.

It can be scary once the date is set. I still get butterflies sometimes but this holiday season we are giving ourselves and those we love an incredible gift for a healthier life.

OK I am two days away from my surgery on Wednesday December 11th. I am nervous only because I don't know what to expect as far as pain. The unknown is what is making me nervous but then again I think that is how it is for everyone. It seems real to a point and then it seems like a dream..does that make sense?

I am waiting for the hospital to call me to let me know when I need to be there.

I totally agree with you. My surgery is less than 24 hours away. And allowing myself to be totally under anesthetic . . . I've never liked that lack of control, or the loss of memory of that time. I know the anesthetic is for the best. I know this surgery is for the best. I need it to help reduce my need for medications. But before that, I need it so I won't have the problems that require those medications. So, for now I'm just focusing on the plan: Clear liquids only today, staying busy, completing the daily projects I have to do today, etc. I'm trying to let tomorrow happen as it should. I don't know if that helps you or not. I hope it does. But it's all I can do.

Well I just finished my lunch (fish). Starting my Clear Liquids now for my sugury wed. I can't wait to start the new me. I am shocked that I am calm and so ready for this. I read a lot of posts and know the first week or so kinda suck but I am still pumped and excited that this is really happening for me and my family.

Mine is in the morning too and I've had the same concerns. A coworker had it done 4 years ago, same procedure, had no pain and no pain med! My doc has already told me I'll have a pain pump in my IV and already gave me a prescription for when I get home. Also have me something else to take twice a day when I get home but it's not for pain it's for healing or an antibiotic I can't remember.

I think it's different for everyone. I'm praying you and I are pain-free and on our way to a healthy life here this time tomorrow! Another weird thing is my doc put me on a liquid diet for 2 weeks, not just two days

I'm on day 4 of my pre-op RNY diet and my headaches finally went away! I am on carnation instant breakfast (no sugar added) 5 shakes a day all mixed with Water except for the last one which I mix with skim milk! I can also have SF Jello & popsickles.

This is an option for me as well how does it taste-is it more of a chocolate milk/hot cocoa or like a Protein Shake?

I've been on Liquid Protein for two weeks, and just clear liquids today. I too hope and pray for our success tomorrow!

So today my asthma totally went crazy. Had to come to the ER and ended up staying in the hospital. Really concerned this may interfere with my surgery scheduled for 12-20. Having to go back on steroids and hoping my doctor won't cancel my surgery because of that. Anyone have any experience with this?

My surgery was scheduled for 830 this morning and I had to be there at 539. Drove to my brothers last night and went it bed at 10. Felt good, no problems. Then I was unable to go to sleep. Midnight, 1am, 2am. By 230 I was in an awful sweat, my pulse was racing, and my stomach felt sore. It was like dumping but I don't know why I had been on my liquid diet. So by 330 it was not any better so I texted my friends and brother who we're coming that I was not going. I just didn't feel like it was safe given the way my stomach and heart were doing. Later in the morning I think the stomach may have been gas but not sure. I called the hospital to cancel but was unable to get anyone until 630. Then the doctors nurse called me about 930 to check on me but I was trying to rest and had the ringer off. I called them back she left a message to reschedule but then I had to leave her one too. I hope they can reschedule it before the end of the year as I've met my deductibles. But it's been an awful day still have not slept. I don't know if it was a panic attack or nerves but when she reschedules me I'm going to see if I can get an Ativan or something for the night before. I even had the bear my sister gave me when I had pancreatitis in 2009 that plays "don't worry be happy" with me! Hope none of you experience this and all goes well.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
