Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?

  1. 1. Knowing what you know now about weight loss surgery, would you do it again if you had the chance to make your decision again?

    • Yes, without a doubt! The surgery has been everything I’d hoped for.

    • Yes, probably. The journey hasn’t been easy, but I’m losing weight and feel that this was my best option.

    • Yes, but I would have chosen a different type of weight loss surgery.

    • No. I’ve had complications and my health has suffered and/or I haven’t been hitting my weight loss goals.

    • I haven’t had the surgery yet, but I’m looking at the results of this poll carefully to help me make my decision!

Hi Alex,

After careful thought and consideration, yes, I would do it again. I haven't really had any complications my weight loss is slow and steadily coming off (preferred method). I am able to do things I haven't been able to do in a while. . It forces me to focus on me! No matter what is going on around me

Over all I haven't had a bad experience. .its only reminds me of how I was living pre-babies.

You're absolutely right... I haven't given it a chance. I guess I was looking for this dramatic weight loss the first few weeks like I keep reading about. My scale has said 200.2 to 200.8 the last week and I'm ready to scream ... I seem to be dropping sizes but I too wanna be able to see the numbers drop.

Hi Leticia,

Trust me I truly understand where ur coming from. On surgery day I weighed 237..I lost a considerable amount the first couple of weeks. Its now been a year and weigh 173!!!

I felt unsuccessful as a girlfriend of mines looked like she was just dropping pounds with each minute!!

It wasn't until another friend (post-op 5 yrs) pointed out to me "hey your weigh loss is slow and steady" that's a better look for u"

Then u can't compare ur self to others your may not be as rapid as someone else bc u don't have as much to lose or maybe you were already pretty much eating a healthier diet and your body is taki gits time to re-adjust.

Don't be so hard on urself. Trust me the weight is coming off. What made it real for me is I went window shopping with a girlfriend. I was trying on size 10 and some 8s.she left the dressing and came back with a 6!!!!!! Can u believe the nerve of HER!?

And I COULD fit it!!?? Can u believe the nerve of me?

So joy DOES come in the morning...good luck & congrats. .

LOL... I loved your story!

Im 3 months post op and now 165 lbs . Wearing a size 11. If I was to answer this question again I would definitely say YES now. I'd have the surgery again and I wouldn't have dragged it out for so long too. I started this process in 2004 and it took me 9 years to focus and decide to follow through.

Yes I did, and Yes I am. Band has been removed, maintaining that loss, and working toward the bypass. Haven't much more to complete and then insurance submitted. Then surgery date to be announced. Actually looking forward to it. Maybe I'll be able to eliminate fifteen + medications, or at least some of them.

Yes I would definitely do it again. I have not had any problems and although the weight loss is slow I know it would be slower if I did not have this tool.

How far out r u post op? And why do you say your weight loss is slow?

I would absolutely have bypass again...down 84 pounds since May! I never would have lost this weight without bypass. I feel so much lighter!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
