Nebraska Anyone???

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I haven't been on in awhile, so its nice to read what's been going on with everybody. As my title says, my band date is fast approaching. I'm getting nervous and impatient all the same. I'm having Dr. Hung do the surgery ($14900?) and am worried about his 'no more than 5 lb wt. gain" policy. I had my initial consult on 10/19 and I've sorta been on the farewell to food tour. Not intentionally, but for someone who didn't think I restricted myself much, I can see that I did! I've been eating pretty much whatever/ whenever since the 19th and I'm up 5-7 lbs. I switched to Protein drinks 1-2x a day but the scale isn't moving. My pre-op diet isn't supposed to start until Dec 3rd buy I'm thinking the day after Thanksgiving is the day!

I know what I NEED to do, its just making myself do it.

Anybody have any concerns with Dr. Hung/Tadducci and their staff? I am confident in them at this point.

I do have a couple of 'hmmmms?' about the surgery in general or maybe it is just me being bitchy. I find it strange that 'ST. E's' requires a chest x-ray, EKG etc for this operation. I had a hysterectomy last year and didn't need any of this pre-op stuff. I'm really burning up about the $450 1 hour Psych consult. If I remember right, the last time I went to counseling (recently) it was about $100-150/hr. My therapist doesn't do weight loss counseling, otherwise I would use him. I just feel like its odd that a major operation like a total hysterectomy costs about $8000 with 3 days in the hospital and this lapraroscopic out-patient surgery is double that. I guess these doctors have tapped into a hot market.

Ok, guess I just needed to vent.

I would love to hear from Nebraska people!! I live in Bennet, SE of Lincoln about 10 miles. I have 3 kiddos, two boys ages 7 and 4, and a very spoiled momma's girl who just turned 3 yesterday. I currently getting my pre-reqs. out of the way while I'm wait-listed for the nursing program at SCC..

I was banded on Oct.24th by Dr. Tadducci, and I am doing well. I had my procedure at Nebraska Surgery Center, even though I did have insurance. It was still cheaper to have it there, only $50.00. Yes, I had to go through all of the pre-op tests, but I believe with patients who are over weight there tends to be a lot of other medical problems. Fortunately, my insurance covered them. I have only worked with Jackie, his nurse and she is very nice. Have you attended the pre-op support meeting yet? You probably have or they would not have scheduled you yet. I have now lost 12 pounds since day of surgery, and feel pretty good. Overall 23 pounds. Down a pants size already. Let me know how you are doing.

I foget to tell you, when you get close to your surgery date call the surgery center and ask about staying at Chase Suite Hotel. I live in Seward and wanted to spend the night following surgery in Lincoln, just in case. We found out that the Surgery Center will pay for one night's stay. I am not sure if you would like to do that or not.

I too am a mother of three, all girls ages, 11, 7, and 2. They really keep me busy. Let me know if I can help you.

Hi! I am from Callaway in central Nebraska and had lap band in November of 2002. I've lost almost 100 lbs, most in the first year and have kept it off, but can't seem to keep losing. My surgery was in Scottsbluff and I f/up in Ogallala. For the most part it's been a very positive experience. I have 3 kids, 1 prior to the surgery and 2 post surgery. I'd love to hear from the rest of you!

I live in North Platte and was glad to find a support forum that was used by folks close to home. I am scheduled for the lap-band surgery on January 29th and will be having it in Scottsbluff. I know that this is what I want by I have been pushing so hard to get it through the insurance that now that it is a reality and happening in just three weeks I am panicing a bit. I have enjoyed reading your entries and feel a bit better about the choice. I think I will be checking in here from time to time to see how you all are doing and share some of my experience. Glad your out there.

Mrs. Husker: Thanks for replying. I was wondering about a couple of things on your posts. If I am reading your signature block right your (h)ighest weight was 235, your (s)tart weight (day of surgery I am assuming) was 223, your ©urrent weight is 180 and your (g)oal weight is 135. Am I reading that correctly? If I am what does the line "Down 43lbs from surgery, 55lbs from Jan 07, only 45 to Goal" mean? For me those numbers would be Highest - 359, Start - well know in 11 days, Current - 356 and Goal - 180. Only 176 to go! Although I am not having much luck at this time I am trying to lose weight before the surgery. I haven't been told to but it doesn't make any sense not to lose weight or to put on more poundage that I am just going to have to take off later and for me I either put it on or take it off, no riding the fence!

I had my surgery March 07 and at that time I had lost 12 lbs. So since surgery I am down 43 lbs, but from Jan 07 I am down 55 lbs.

So 10 more days, I will be thinking about you and hope that your recovery is as great as mine was. I can not stress enough how important walking is. Get up and move as much as you can. The first time I got out of bed after surgery, I could only get to the bathroom door and back, but before the night was out, I was walking slow laps up and down the hall in the hospital. Then when I got home, I would walk around the block every few hours. Walking and Gas-X strip, along with my heating pad, kept the pain at bay. The only time I used the pain meds when I got home was the first two night just to help me sleep. Also, hot tea was a God send. Just remember that for the first month or so after surgery is for healing. Don't worry if the scale is not moving, that will come when you start your fills.

Once again, best of luck and keep us posted. We are here for you.

Mrs. Husker, Thanks for the advise, it came in handy. I was thinking of your post the day of surgery and got up moving sooner than I think anyone expected. I am five days from surgery, the pain is mostly gone, the diet is working great and I have lost 18 lbs already! I am looking forward to getting to a point where I can exercise too and see how that works! Thanks again for you words of wisdom.

Hi! I am from Fremont NE and looking forward to getting a lap band at some point when I get everything worked out. I am set to go to St. Elizabeth's in Lincoln for the meeting on Thursday. If anyone has experience with them or with Coventry insurance I would appreciate any words of wisdom. I don't really know what I am doing yet. Just trying to get something started.

Have a great day! Tonja:redface:

Tonja - Welcome to LBT (LapBandTalk) I found the following response on this thread from another poster askinga similar question. Thought I might re-post it just incase someone doesn't see your post by Tomorrow. Good Luck. A group meeting sound a bit strange to most at first. I know it did me. I wanted to see the doc one on one and was a bit annoyed at having to attend a seminar first but in the end I found that so many people had not only the same questions I did but also thought to ask some even better questions that hadn't even crossed my mind. So in the end it was more usefull to go as a group. It kept him from having to repeat himself 100 times over, It gave me answers to questions I hadn't thought of and it also made me realise just how many other people there were out there just like me. In some ways the last one was the most important it helped me feel a little less "guilty" so to speak for considering weight loss surgery.

Well before I go on to long let me just say welcome to the site one more time and I look forward to seeing more of you around here.

Joely,

The initial seminar at St. E's is a round table presentation describing the procedure. They tell about both the lap band and gastric bypass if there are people there wanting more info on that. They talk about the preop qualifications, the preop diet etc and then describe the surgery day and all that happens. They discuss the post op diets, Protein supplements and what to expect following surgery. Most of the people there had already had a consult with Dr. Hung I believe and it was used as a preop teaching session. That was the first thing I attended. This was presented by the nurses.

I also went to another class on a Saturday morning that I really didn't know what it was. It ended up being a general overview of the services they offer and what things must be in place for you to qualify for surgery. The nurses and one of the doctors were there to answer questions.

There wasn't really any one on one time with them but they were happy to answer questions after the program also. What I have been seeing on here is there is really basically not alot of difference in the insurances, they seem to have much of the same requirements with just a little difference here or there.

I hope this helps you! Good luck on your journey, I am counting down, hope to be banded by February!

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
