March 2013 Post Op "A New Life 2013"

Recommended Posts

I'm home from hospt. Had surg on Tuesday. Did Clear Liquids ( 60cc's every hour) all day. Today I started full liquid diet for 2 weeks til my post op. I'm to get 120 cc's every hour and increase as tolerated a little at a time. I haven't had a BM but I did pass gas once. The gas pains are still a big issue it hurts really bad but no nausea so far thank god. I came off the more phone yest bc it wasn't helpings and started the loratab and thy seems to help but it tastes nasty so I have to take a drink after that. All in all it's going good. I did gain 14 pounds in the hosp bc of all the gas they filled me up with and the amount of fluids I got. I did have to get more fluids than normal bc my urine didn't look good and my kidney function levels started to increase. I'm happy to be here.

I wish the best for everyone.

Hope your recovery at home goes great :)

I suppose to have 4 med cups of clear liquid and 2 med cups of Protein Shake every hour. I can't do it' date=' it's too much. I'm really trying. I'm only 2 days post op. any suggestions. I'm trying to walk as much as I can too. This gas pain is terrible that I have to take the pain meds every 4 hrs for some relief. I also take chewable gas x too, but u can only take so many a day. I need this gas gone![/quote']

Honestly I only focused on my Water for those first couple days. I'm only 8 days po and just started getting more Protein in. Good luck :)

So today was the first day to start back on my regular pills. So I crushed them and mixed with applesauce as instructed and it was terrible. I only was able to take half of the amount bc it was so bad and it felt like I was gonna vomit it all up again. I even wen as far as putting my hair up in a pony tail quickly. Lol. Any suggestions on crushing ur pills an taking them with something different that will mask ye flavor of the crushed. pudding maybe? I'm on full liquid diet for 2 weeks.

I am also on full liquid diet. I have just been swallowing mine with a tiny amount of Water. I space them out through out the morning, afternoon, evening. I did previously read that others suggest crushing and putting in Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup. I bought it, but haven't tried my meds in it.

I'm having a good day! My biggest problem is being so full. I have a Gtube that goes to my remnant stomach' date=' and I have to put two boost shakes in there as well as any of the 80oz of fluids that I can't get into my pouch each day. The problem is I don't feel like my remnant stomach is emptying like it should b/c it's always full, I have to constantly open the tube and empty my stomach. I'm getting around good, and having minimal pain. The key to getting rid of the gas is to walk!! That does it every time. Everytime I get up and walk for even ten minutes, I have to pee and pass gas, sometimes even a BM. So walk, walk, walk. I just want to feel normal and not so full!![/quote']

I was wondering why so many people had g tubes in after surgery. They removed my remnant stomach.

Hi all, I had my surgery on Wednesday and am home today. Only need Tylenol for the soreness..haven't had any nausea..I think I am very lucky. I do have one weird thing happening. It started in the hospital and continues but to a lesser degree and that is shakiness or trembling. Has anyone else had that? I think it's related to the anesthia.

Hi everyone! I'm 3 days post op and feel so weak today. I finally started passing gas from the bottom end last night.

But today my pouch isn't as happy as it was. Is this normal?

Hmmm... Define "happy". There's a whole lot of variations on normal, so I'd be willing to bet you're probably ok. Are you feeling bad? Congrats on the gas! It's the little things ;)

You'll get a big AMEN from me on that too. I have been so gassy today, finally passed a bunch and had a BM. My stomach is very loud. It growls ALL the time. Walking has helped but as soon as I put food in there, the noise starts again. I had my husband pick up Dannon lite and fit yogurt today but noticed it has 10g of sugar. I am nervous to try it, I can only have 2tbsp so I am hoping it will be alright but any input is appreciated.

Hello everyone,

I'm four days post op and feeling pretty darn good. The first two days were kinda rough, but now I am sipping, walking, and resting. Glad to be on the other side!

I eat the Dannon Light n fit Greek yogurt- has twice the Protein and less sugar. However I was given the rule of thumb to avoid anything more than 12-14 g of sugar per sitting.

Your pouch is swollen from surgery. try your best with liquids. Your goal to stay hydrated. Walking gets rid of gas. in a week you will feel much better. Good luck.

Have you tried to just cut them in half and swallow them with Water? I thought I would have to crush some of mine but have been able to take them as usual without crushing them just have you cut them. I too am still on full liquids but the pills dissolve so quickly once they go down. So they shouldn't harm you.

I have not tried that yet. Tomorrow I was going to crush and take one at a time and see how that goes. If that doesn't work I will try ur idea. Thank you.

I just take mine whole one at a time. My doc told me not to crush them unless I had any problems' date=' and so far so good. I take 3 pills every morning. One is small, but the other 2 are about the size of a Tylenol. If you have to crush them, sugar free pudding is the way to go.[/quote']

I thought about pudding bc I'm on full liquids but I wasn't sure bc my dr said applesauce.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
