13 days til surgery and now I'm scared :-(

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new here and so glad I've found rnytalk!

Surgery has been my goal for the past 6 months and now that everything's a "GO!" I'm so anxious and afraid. I feel like my concerns may be a bit invalid/vain however I still feel this way. But I figure this will be the place to help me through-- 1. What do I tell my coworkers about my "mysterious" weight loss? I shouldn't be ashamed about the surgery but my weight has ALWAYS be an embarrassing subject for me!! 2. How do I not have/reduce the issue of excess skin as I work toward my goal weigh? My heart is beating fast as I type cause I'm so scared. I feel like I can't admit my fears because my support people will be like "well, don't have the surgery then!" But they don't really understand what this is like for me :-( I have a few other concerns but these are the most pressing issues right now.

Welcome to the group.

I have always been honest about telling people. I was scared they would think I had a disease like cancer, but it is a personal choice. You do not have to tell anyone. When asked about the weight loss say you are working hard on your New Years resolution.

As for the skin question there are a lot of factors. Age, genetics, amount of weight loss. I am 33 and have found working out is the best thing to stay toned. I have some flabby skin, but hopefully my increased work outs will help. I 7 months post op down 89 pounds.

This group is wonderful and no question is off limits so if you have more let us know!

Glad you found us. And if you weren't nervous or scared then something would be wrong. It is perfectly natural, this is a big deal But you will be fine. As far as co workers go, the above advice sounds good to me. Tell them what you are comfortable telling them, if you don't want to tell about the surgery, don't just say you are on a new eating and exercise plan, which you will be. Keep comming here in the next few days reading and asking questions. We will help you through. You got this.

Hello! I think this is my first post but thought I'd say that I also feel like you I don't want to share my surgery details with my coworkers. I've got one girl in the office that had the surgery but won't admit it. She looked sick when she first got it done but now she starting to look normal. It could've just been the way she looked after surgery. My HR department is known for gossip so I wonder how I'm going to keep it a secret? Good luck!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
