Anyone else over 50??

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am new here, researching to see if the lap-band surgery is for me. Wondering if I am maybe too old, if having it done at this age would create more complications than a younger person. Anyone know?:)

There was a thread just recently about this subject.....wish I could find it for you....there were lots of great replies.

I was banded at 61 going on 80....terrible health, terrible physical condition, using a walker part of the time, handicapped and pretty well useless. I figured I had nothing to lose but weight. Now.....less than a year later, I am 62 going on 63 - I've lost 110 lbs and I have my life back. I am healthier and happier than I've been in many years. I still have a lot to lose but if I don't lose another pound it has all been worth it. I not only have a life now.....I also have a future and I didn't have much of one before. :clap2:

Don't let age stand in your way!!

Not only are you not too old, you will feel so much younger after you get the band and loose the weight. I am 54 have been banded for a yr and would do it again in a heart beat. Other then the obvious weight loss, the most important thing for me was regaining my joy of life. I lost that somewhere and forgot just how much fun life can be!

Hi Mattie,

I am researching getting banded, too. I am 64 and pretty sure I am going to have it done. I am reading everything I can on it.

Go for it! I am 53 and was banded 1/15. Everyone says I am just like my mother and she is 84 and going strong. I do not want to spend 31+ years on the sideline watching the world pass me by. I want to play with my grandchildren without running out of breath or stopping because my back or knees are killing me.

Life is not over at 50. If we play it right, it is just beginning. Haven't you heard - 50 is the new 30!

I am 55 and went through this with a breeze. I wish I could have done this sooner but I will be 56 in Sept and if I had to do it all over again I would in a heartbeat. Outside of marrying my husband, this is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I do not feel my age, I feel like a kid again....it has opened up a whole new world for me.

Hi Mattie,

I am 50 right now and will be 51 on February 1st. I'm not banded yet, but I've seen my surgeon and am getting there on setting a surgery date! I've spent the past 25 years not dating or enjoying life at all. I'm looking forward to getting healthy and possibly finding someone to share my life with. I can't wait for the new me!

I'm 52 and was banded in March last year. I'm walking without a cane now and just look forward to things getting even better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
