Negative People Around Me...

Recommended Posts

For me its hard because my family is overweight and you would think they would understand...I think they are getting more comfortable with it now...I think they are concerned because I am so young and with any surgery there can be complications and we already lost my brother 5 years ago christmas day in iraq so I think they are scared something might happen....but I feel like if I don't do this something might happen. Sometimes when I go to bed at night idk if im going to wake up I have horrible chest pains and it hurts to lay on my back bc of all the pressure on my chest. Right now I have a good 150 to 180 pounds to lose. Im sick of being depressed about my weight. I've never been so excited to get started with something. I have so much motivation to go workout now and im just getting started...I think when I see the weight coming off I will be even more motivated. Can someone tell me what the average amount of calories is for someone post op? And also another question I have is what are people eating after surgery? I know for a little while its liquids only but I don't really know how to cook very well...and I am not the best grocery shopper lol. I need some advice. And I just want to say that I am here for anyone that needs it. I love this site! If anyone needs extra support or is maybe getting started with the process private msg me if you want to keep in touch through the process. Its always nice to have a friend that knows what your going through :):)

Oh wow.. where have I been! I completely missed out on this topic.

But anyhow Jessica, there are many reasons why people react negatively to someone having this surgery, weather it is envy or plain ignorance. Have you actually explained the procedure to your family? Let them know you want to live a healthy life. And even suggest they do the same so that they can be healthy as well.

Regardless of what they say and think, you are your own person, and as long as you are committed and your husband is going to be there to support you then that is all you really need. Everyone else will learn to except it after the fact.

I wish you the best with your decision. Good luck! :)

Oh btw...

I'm 9 weeks post op, and hmmm... I wanna know what post op ppl eat too! Lol jk. Each surgeon is different. For sure you will be on Protein for a few months. A liquid diet for atleast 2 weeks maybe more depending on your surgeon. Mine had me on liquids until I was 7 weeks post op. I'm barely beginning to introduce foods to my diet, but its not a fun process.

So it really depends on how well your body reacts and how well it begins to tolerate healtier foods again.

Hope it answers some questions ;)

Hi Sweet, as I have put on one of my posts, U.K. surgeons don't follow the same pattern as US surgeons, who go for Protein Shakes. I am on my 8th day, have lost 18Ibs in the last 7 days and started today my pureed 2 weeks with yoghurt for Breakfast and pureed cottage cheese for lunch. No problem. Hope you do well :-)

Hey tor!

Wow! Sounds like you're doing great! Keep up the good work!

Trust me tor, I wish my surgeon wouldn't mandate I take Protein. L0L

Hi Sweet and Anjela, its your bodies, but you can always ask your surgeons. I drink 1 pint of skimmed milk a day.

Check out http://www.bospa.org/Information.aspx?Page=21

BOSPA is like the main U.K. organisation for Bariatric surgeons. I feel great, In fact I am walking 10,000+ steps a day (4-5 miles) which I struggled to do before the op, and as I said I had pureed pork yesterday. I can't say this is for everyone, bodies are different, but I was recommended to do 2 weeks of Protein drinks before the op, but told not to take them afterwards....food for thought :-)

Just a thought, 1 cup of milk has 8 grams of Protein, 1 yoghurt 8-12 grams, cottage cheese is also good. I do not plan to have the pureed pork, chicken etc very often, but prefer to stick to the yoghurt, cottage cheese path, since I am not hungry but like the odd change. I mix some milk with the cottage cheese to help the puree process and its fine for me. Good luck.

Tell them to Go away if they are going to be negative.

I am just getting started with this process ...im only about a month into it. And there are some people in my life that are very negative and don't have many good things to say... such as "we know how you are jess you'll never stick to it" or "with all your health problems do you really think you can even handle this?" Or they say something like "I don't believe you've really given anything else a good enough try". Its so upsetting to me because I have tried! And the reason I want to get this done is to help with alot of my health problems...has anyone else experienced this happening to them? If so how did you handle it. I almost feel like its more motivation to prove them wrong but at the same time it really hurts my feelings.

Thanks everyone for the advice and support! This may sound weird but can anyone tell me what pureed means? Lol I don't cook or know hardly a thing about food... so when I read the forums im confused on what people are talking about. Also where do I get Protein shakes at? Like the ones at the grocery store?

Purée is when you put the food in a blender or food processor and make it like baby food. Ilk. You can get the Protein Shakes at the grocery store, GNC, Walmart or target.

You should check with your surgeon to see if there is a specific Protein that you should use. My surgeon says pretty much all are good as long as they're made with whey protein. I personally like EAS (I buy these at Walmart or food maxx) also the Atkins Protein drinks are good. They're premixed or you can buy EAS in powder form. The only protein my surgeon doesn't want me using is the collagen based, you find it in the Protein Shots which sound nice because they're small but you don't absorb as much of the protein. You should check Walmart, bariatriceating.com or Vitamin shots. Good luck.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
