Does anyone else worry about not waking up from surgery. My daughter is getting married in July and my youngest is graduating from college. That's what keeps weighing on my mind. I look at all the people having this surgery or had it and I know that this is a well practiced procedure. I start pre-op on Tuesday. Surgery on the 21st.

No I dont harp on that , I believe when its your time, it just is, I believe that the doctors know what they are doing and I trust them completely .

Thanks it's starting to feel real now. I know in my heart that I will feel so much better than I do right now.

Heck no! It is the best sleep ever. Actually, it's more like, leave me alone, so I can sleep. Now that said- if you have severe lung disease or heart disease and you are a High risk case, then your choice is to die without surgery, or die trying.

I said goodbye to family and friends and I was crying up until the anesthesiologist came into the operating room to put me out.

Death was a real fear for me.

I was 23 at the time of surgery and healthy, this was my first surgery, I was afraid that I would never wake up and that it would be over all due to one decision.

I woke up in a lot of pain, lol.

It's natural to have fear. Talk to your surgeon and ask him for his stats on complications and deaths. My first day of surgery preop, in a class of 30+ people, I asked the surgeon how many people have died on him. Made him and everyone else uncomfortable. He said that in their hospital, 1 patient died 14 years ago during an RNY.

I ended up having the head of the Bariatric surgery team as my surgeon.

Ask questions, as many as make you feel comfortable. No one cares what you ask, you want to have all of them answered so you know what you're getting into

I worried more about having a heart attack from being obese. Please don't think I'm minimizing your fear, I would not do so. Just relaying how I felt at the time. I agree with Cupcake...if it's your time, it's your time, only God knows when and how.

I pray all goes well and you have nothing but smooth sailing!

By the way, when you're a few months post op, I promise these emotions will be a distant memory...however you will need to begin shopping for all new clothes!

I've had 12 different surgeries where I was put out for the process. Every time I faced that dread of "what if" and every time it went like this: You're going to feel real relaxed....now count back from 100.....100, 99, 98......Shirley...wake up Shirley...your surgery's over....you did fine. So I agree with the other folks in this forum that I face a greater risk of death by not having the surgery. I, too am 5'4" with a starting weight of 235. The pre-op diet has taken me down to 217, and my surgery will be sometime in November. My 53" belly touches my legs, and it is getting harder and harder to stand up straight. So, the greater risk for me is to not take this journey.
