Recommended Posts

hey it went well I seen him todqy he talked a little wbout nutrition but didnt make me do a journal or anything not sure why but I have been on my own diet and lost 14lbs so he seen the beginning weight from a month agobut he was pretty easy going he printed me up som3 things to read. Before I left I made an appt for next Friday so I have 2 more visits so they defenetly dont have to be 2 wks apart I think its just the drs preference cause ur right they told me the same ins onky cares about one visit but my dr wants me to see him 3 times. Ill keep u posted if he makes me write a journal! Take care thanx for checking up let me know when ur almostvready to summit to ins I hope it comes fast for u :)

I hope it comes fast too! Did he sit in front of his 3 computers when talking to you? I think he was googling everything I talked about. Maybe he had a little time to prep for you after he saw me lol. You said your surgeon gave you an info sheet? What are some of the things on it?

Hey the sheet just had numbers on it I have no idea what it meant I'm guessing it was so he knew what to go over with me, but he also seemed like he didn't know what to talk about hopefully next visit will be better if not I may have to see someone who knows a Lil bit more! But he did sit in front of his computer lol!

I feel the same way. I might look into seeing someone else. Though, there is so much information between the forum and the internet. I'll just take matters into my own hands! We can't possibly be the only bariatric patients he's ever had. He's also a pediatric gastroenterologist. I would think he would have a little insight. Sounds like you might have gotten a little more info than I did though. I'm hoping the next appointment is better. When are you going back?

hey everyone...i am stumped. who did you see for your psych evaluation? at this point i am thinking i will have to pay out of pocket for an evaluation and clearance from a psychologist because i cant find one in my area (hudson county nj) that HNJH approves! other than my psych, i have all of my other specialists in place. any suggestions, advice, experiences are welcome! thanks!

i also went back and read everyones updates...i think it's so interesting the way the insurance works. i had my 3rd nutritionist appointment last week and overheard her saying to another patient (we were in group meeting) that because she had HNJH, she had to have 5 visits...then they went on and scheduled her next one. my nutritionist even made an announcement to all horizon patients concerning our nutritionist!!! i think that's crazy other people only have to have 1 visit and we have to have 5. again, im not complaining because the visits are excellent and really do put into perspective how we will be eating for the rest of our lives...they are GREAT preparation for surgery. but it's just so odd that the requirements vary so much by location.

I had to pay out of pocket... $300. But that was the only out of pocket expense I have had, so I just sucked it up and put it toward my good cause. HNJH does not cover any mental health care unless you are covered under a specific program.

My nutritionist wanted to keep seeing me, though I only needed one visit as required by insurance. I suppose my situation is unique because he did absolutely nothing for me. Not even a food pyramid chart! NOTHING! My referral was for up to 6 visits, but I only needed one. I'm pretty sure he's just milking the insurance company and wasting my time. I hope you're in a better situation than I am. Good luck!

Hey all. Just curious if anyone has gotten their surgery yet or a date. If so, did the insurance company give you any trouble? How long did it take to get approved?

I have my pre op exam on June 4th, aiming for a surgery date of June 30th!

Dr Balsama is also with Kennedy Bariatric. Has anyone had experience with him?

I am seeing Dr. Neff at Kennedy. I've heard nothing but good things about the surgeons at Kennedy. I believe I read that Dr Balsama does the single incision surgery and was one of the first to do it.

Good choice :) I absolutely adore him. He's so comforting and patient. He will sit with you for an hour and answer every single question you have. Do you have a surgery date yet?

Hello everyone. I'm just starting my journey. I has horizon nj health. I have my first appt with Dr Goldstein 6/13. And the seminar is 6/9.

I'm a little nervous because I'm unsure of the process and how long it will take to get a date

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
