I just found a negative side effect of the surgery. My uvula is swollen. Doesn't hurt but it is very irritating. I assume it was from the tube they put down my throat during surgery. Anybody else have this?

I started noticing that yesterday feels like a sore throat I assumed it was from the tube also.

The surgery went well. When I came to out of the anesthesia fog I felt like a freight train had run over me and I wanted to throw up, but didn't. A few hours later in the room I felt much better, but still somewhat nauseous and naturally sore in the mid-section. I was only allowed crushed ice that day. Finally, later in the afternoon/early evening I was able to take a jaunt around the ward, and did so again a couple of hours later. Watched MNF, and later when I couldn't sleep took another jaunt around. Day 2 I was given Water and later a clear-liquid meal, and a second one mid-day. Saw the surgeon and the dietician and was discharged; and I was ready to go home. At home I was very stiff and sore. I made myself go for a walk which loosened up the joints, but when I sat for any give amount of time I would stiffen up. Kept moving my legs and feet to avoid clotting. Yesterday was similar, but better, and today I feel very little soreness and no more stiffness. Walked a mile this morning. On Clear Liquids until Sunday when I can add milk, etc. Week 3 soft solids with emphasis on Protein. I see my surgeon again next Tuesday. Also experienced that sore throat yesterday and day before, but not today thus far. I can feel, even with the clear liquid when I am consuming a little too quickly.

I had my surgery on the 23rd and it was a pretty good day. I had a headache the first week of pre-op but knew why so pushed on. So grateful I did. This is going to be awesome. However...I'm only 3 day post surgery and I'm already a bit bored...which is why I looked for this place. Good luck everyone. And sorry S. Harper that you got post poned to the 24th. I hope you are doing well.

I got back yesterday. I am super sore on the incision where my stomach was removed but the rest of me is fine. No Gas problems or eating issues. I am very tired. The cool thing was my surgeon gave me 6 colored photos of my insides. I saw my stomach before and after. I saw my gall bladder. I saw the staples and the way he sews it over again. The part that was the most fascinating with me was my fat, The pictures only confirm my decision, my organs are swimming in belly fat. I hope everyone is having a speedy recovery.

Now I'm a bit jealous. I didn't get any photos. She did say all my organs look very good though. I take that as a plus.

I had mine on the 23rd at like 12pm because someone cancelled. It is not As painful as I thought it would be! All I want to do is sleep. I came home last night. I've been doing fine getting my liquids. I noticed when I started passing gas the pressure went away so I'm all for the gas right now lol. I tried Jello way too soon. I'm glad everyone seems to be doing well!

Hello September 23rd Sleevers:

I had my surgery on September 23 as scheduled! I am blessed and happy to report that so far this has been a great experience for me. Virginia Hospital Center is the best! I know now why they are rated #1 for Bariatric Surgery in the USA!. My surgeon and the team of residents and nurses were second to none. We had concerns because I have sarcoidoisis, diabetes and asthma. But I had no serious issues. The only issue that came up was the first pp did not start until Wednesday:). I have 4 very small incisions on my stomach and of course one port hurts more than the others because thats where the stomach was removed. I have pain but it is manageable with liquid medications. My taste buds seem to be in tact so far. I am very confident with the decision that I made to have the surgery and have it at this hospital. Thanks to everyone for your posts because you all have helped me get this far. I'll keep you posted.

Linda

Post op day 4 today and finally on to full liquids!! Thanks goodness, i had had about all the broth and Jello I can stand for a bit. lol Had the "vanilla cake batter why protein" made with skim milk. Took me an hour and a half with slow sips but I finished it. I am beginning to discover what that full feeling is.

Hello, I guess I will post something finally. Lol

My surgery was the 23 too. There was expected pain. Only got sick once, got in a hurry with my Jello. Had some trouble doing that breathing thing and didn't help that my allergies decided to get crazy right before surg day.

Tonight I got to meet the guy that gave my mom the info for my surgery. It was great talking to him. He's not even a year out and has lost over 200 pounds. He is now 272lb. AMAZING!

Today is one week since my surgery! It has been a long week but each day is getting better! I ended up having a hernia so my surgeon had to remove it as well. I got a 2 in 1 deal! Lol I was only nauseous once but the nurse gave me meds & I didn't have to experience the painful vomiting! I was released the next day & have been home recovering since. I was pretty sore...more sore than I thought but my doctor said it was because of the hernia & was quite surprised I hadn't complained or noticed I had it. I also was very weak. A shower took all my energy. I started trying to get more Water & more of my Protein Shakes in me to help with the energy. I hate feeling like I'm fixing to pass out. I saw that someone has already walked a mile! WOW! I haven't tried but I think I will as soon as the rain stops! Oh & hair loss...I was told by friends who have had the surgery that I'd lose a lot of hair & I'm crossing my fingers because that hasn't happened yet. I'm hoping it won't be bad when/if it happens. I'm taking Biotin & am hoping it will help. I'm glad to see everyone is doing well & will be thinking of you all along our new life journey!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
