I just came home from my pre-op appointment at the surgery center, and I asked about Aunt Flo and they said they will do the surgery no matter if she comes along or not! YEAH!

Then they said if I am on my period that day, then I have to notify them if I wear pads or tampons, and that if I use tampons then that is fine, it can stay in! I was shocked!

Stayed tuned...appointment with surgeon and lab work at 2:30 PM EST this afternoon. I took the whole day off just to get all these appointments done in one day.

My period started a couple of hours after surgery while I was still out from the anesthesia. I was very nauseated and the nurses forced me to sit up even though I was having trouble actually waking up from the anesthesia. Well, when I sat up, Aunt Flo came flowing. What a mess. And I was too sore to bend over and clean myself up, so the nurses had to clean me up and put the mesh panties and maternity pad on me. Very embarrassing.

Just something to think about as far as the tampon goes, will you be able to bend enough to reach and remove it? I was not able to bend enough to insert one and had to wear the boat for my entire Aunt Flo visit. Just some food for thought. I would be so embarrassed to have a nurse get it for me postop if I couldn't get it. :)

My Aunt Flo is due in town on Thurday, I have my Band Surgery on Tuesday. I pretty much anticipated not being able to bend over the for tampons, so I bought the big ol' pads. Mom tells me they used to be secured in with BELTS! Bad enough now, but belts???/ Oh lord.

knowing my luck, it will come during surgery. Just my luck.

I had these after my c-section - they are "belts" but are made out of elastic. You really don't feel them at all. Getting used to having a pad when you're used to tampons would be the biggest issue, IMO, but I use pads WITH my tampons so I don't think I'll notice - if the need arises

But speaking of bending over......I now have visions of wiping myself after using the toilet. OUCH! :omg:

I got my period just before surgery and thankfully someone on this board advised not to wear a tampon. It would have been difficult to remove. I was allowed to wear my own pad but not my own underwear (mesh panties it is!). It's really not that big a deal. Remember, you're dealing with medical professionals and this is just a fact of life. I'm sure they have much more disgusting things to deal with on a daily basis. After all, doing surgeries every day means they see blood every day, too!

I had my period the day of surgery. I brought my own pads with me to use since I stayed 2 nights. I also had a catheder and I was not a big deal either. No worrys!

I was told by a "friend"...cant confirm this though...that I would need to bring tampons to the hospital with me, as most women will start their period following surgery. I was also told that the tampons are preferred because it makes getting up and walking that much easier, as the mesh granny panties with a pad will be to restrictive after surgery.

Also, after reading through many websites, on what to expect during and immediately following surgery that if a cathetar is needed, it will be inserted after the anesthesia is administered and removed just prior to "waking up"? HELP!!! Can anyone confirm or dispute this for me?

when I woke up after surgery I had a cathetar. It was put in while I was under. I kept mine in overnight since my surgery was early evening (6:00) Next morning it was removed. Not a big deal. It did not interfere with my period either. I just wore a pad and some big undies I brought from home.

Hey - I didn't even get to wear a pad... They just put a sterile cloth under me on the table. EEEEEWE.

Of course, I was passed out at the time - so I didn't care. After I woke up - I got to put my own duds back on - which was fine.

The folks at the surgery center made me very comfortable about the whole thing and I didn't feel self conscious - well not much, anyway.

I am sure that you will be just fine, Auntie F or no.

Hugs!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
