Ideal goal weight?

Recommended Posts

I'm 5'7" and currently about 285 lbs. I originally thought 140 would be great but then I figured maybe with all the extra skin, maybe that's too high of an expectation? Maybe 150? I guess that I will know when I get there but just curious about what others around the same height & age (44) have felt comfortable with/without working out & building lean muscle. Thanks!

I am 5'7" and currently weigh 275. 20 years ago when i got pregnant I was 158 and wore a size 8. I am going for anything in the 150's. I hope that helps. Oh yeah and I am 48.

I'm 5'7" and would be thrilled at 160, and my surgeon is totally supportive of that goal...I've never been "that small" as an adult...in college when I was 19 or 20 I started on phen-fen when I weighed 187 (hilarious to me now) and as I recall I got down to about 169, and was quite pleased....10 pounds more than that is almost incomprehensible to me :-)

Good luck on your journey!

I'm 5' 6.75" & I set a goal for myself of 155 only because that would give me a "normal" BMI at my doctor's office. That 155 would be after I've stabilized & had a panniculectomy.< /p>

About age 23, I did the Adkin's diet & went from 201 to 163 & actually stayed there for a couple of years. I still remember people telling me I needed to lose more weight so that has a big influence on me. I haven't asked my surgeon yet what he thinks my goal should be. My nutritionist suggested 150 but did agree that my goal of 155 was good.

I set 'baby' goals for myself. First one being to hit 199. Second one to hit 175. So on and so forth. I felt it was easier than putting a one time goal weight. I think I had decided I'd be good at 150. When I hit that, I felt I could go ahead and go down to 139 which was an official 100 pounds. That ended up being a perfect weight for me. Also, I just wanted to be a healthy BMI. That was more so a work goal (we get discounts on our insurance if we have a healthy BMI).

That's just my two cents :) Good luck to you!!

I'm 5'6, my initial goal is 199 :) However, my ultimate goal is between 170 and 180. I think we all carry our weight differently. I haven't seen 150 on my scale since 9th grade, I can't even fathom myself at 150 now. I am preparing myself mentally just in case I go under goal.

Your nurse and nutritionist should discuss reasonable expectations with you. It's usually a % of your EXCESS weight.

I am 5'9" and weigh 280. I am looking to loose about 100 pounds which would put me somewhere near 180. I would like to get to a size 10, but everyone is telling me that I would look sick. I have asked my doctor and he said 100 pounds at least is a good goal.

I'm 5 '5" and started at 248 almost 4 yrs ago. Then I was lapbanded and lost 104 lbs (9 lbs to my 135 goal). Got married and had to wear a shawl with my sleevless dress cuz of my ugly backfat.

Fast forward 2 yrs: Lapband slipped, gained 30 lbs back and was revised to the sleeve 7 weeks ago. Started at 174 and have lost 18 lbs so far (156). Dropped my goal weight to 130 this time cuz of that backfat. Like I'd lose the extra 5 lbs just from the rolls on my back :)

So 130 is now my new goal. We'll see how I feel once I get there. My healthy weight is anywhere from 115-150. I think less than 125 would be too thin, however. At least for me. At 248, I was happy to be less than 150. Now I really can taste the 130. only 26 lbs left to go. I know they'll be the slowest 26 lbs yet!

I am 5'3" and my goal is 140. However, I got down from 293 to 160 7 years ago and was really happy at that weight. If I can get back to that, or even 175, I'll be pretty darn happy. I started at 273 and I'm currently 240.

Thank you, everyone. I'm not sure why but I never discussed my goal with the Dr or the nutritionist! I have to guess that I'd be thrilled to be at 150, since I haven't seen that number since the 8th grade! I think that would be a reasonable number to maintain plus or minus 5 pounds. My concern is that at 44, I wonder how well I'll do with the extra skin? It's hard to imagine not resembling a Shar- Pei when all is said and done! Has anyone out there at my age and weight not felt like they needed a panniculectomy after reaching goal? Does insurance ever cover plastics?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
