Preop Protein Nausea

Recommended Posts

I'm about 6 weeks out from surgery so I've been teeing out Protein powders. So far, only tried Unjury and I get a little nausea with them. I've done medifast in the past and I used to get a little nausea with those shakes too. Is it possible whatever protein is in these doesn't sit well? I'm guessing it is whey protein, right?

Yes it's whey. Maybe time to try soy, or pea Protein or something else?

Hmmm, a lot of the non-whey Protein isn't as good so I am told. Maybe try others, most high end suppliers have sample packs. I use Unjury.< /p>

Another thought. What are you mixing them with? If its milk, you could try soy or almond milk or Water and see if that help first. The whey is really absorbed better/faster than the other types, so if you could stick to it, it's better for you.

What are you mixing them with? Some set better with me with Water others with milk..have you tried and ready to drink? A lot of people like Premier Protein rtd sold at like Walmart Sams club think costco but only comes in chocolate and vanilla...alum maybe try something like Atkins advantage little lower in Protein but may help your body get use to it...since your pre op this is good time to check them all out lol including plant based

Thanks for the advice, everyone. So far everything I have taken has been with Water. I will try them out with some soy milk (never did like drinking regular milk). I'll try some different brands. There's a pharmacy here in town that supposedly sells different brands' samples. If that doesn't work, I'll try some soy Protein.< /p>

Pre-op I drank the RTD EAS carb control shakes. I would stick a straw in them... Drink about half, hold my breath while I stuck some Peanut Butter or almonds in my mouth. Then I would repeat. Never made me sick, unless I slowed myself to actually taste it. Post-op milk has been my best friend! I never drank milk pre-op. but when it goes you additional protein... I am all about some milk! I also use Unjury. Love it! I add PB2 and it kills the sweetness. Good luck to you!

Try some warm broth with salt. No Protein, but it will help with the nausea. Or if you want Soup with protein, Unjury makes a chicken soup flavor with protein. Good for post op too.

I think your surgery is coming up soon yes? Wanted to suggest that you maybe try lactaid pills before your shakes. They help me.

It is coming up in about 6 weeks. I haven't brought myself to try more of it cause of the nausea but I am going to try mixing with soy milk, probably next weekend. Thanks for the advice on the lactose pills. I'll def give that a try too.

I've also heard that muscle milk might be a good alternative as well.

Muscle milk still makes me nauseated. It's pretty heavy on the whey I think. I say that because of the "protein load" you get with each shake.

I was sleeved on 8/6/13 and I am still struggling with Protein Drinks. Everything I try seems to bother my stomach. Forget Protein Shakes. The foam created by shaking or blending causes me to suffer all day. I am of the soft stage but can only eat about 4 bites so its very difficult to get the Protein in.

So, I finally bit the bullet and tried the shakes again. I tried the Syntrax vanilla with soy milk and once again, nausea. I am wondering if I will just have to deal with it. If I drink each if them with 16 ounces of soy, I would be getting 37 each time, so 74 if I drank to. That would be pretty close to the 80 they want me to get, even if I were to be able to drink them all. I'll probably just have to grin it and bear it. I need to try the lactaid suggestion as well. Maybe I'll become used to it. I dealt with it back on medifast days so there's that too.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
