Anyone not on a pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading all these posts about the pre-op diets and I am scheduled for surgery next Thursday (holy crap, it's coming) and was never put on a diet.

I guess I should give a background, I'm 31, and probably considered a "lightweight" currently hovering between 250 and 255 lbs. In choosing to get sleeved, my doctor mentioned it would be a good option for me because I had less than 150 lbs. to lose (goal weight 145).

I was given instructions not to GAIN weight and not to gorge leading up to surgery, especially the night before. But other than that, no restrictions. I've been trying to eat more cleanly in the last month for my own sanity, but I've definitely had some foods that I either want to say bye bye to permanently or that I know I won't be indulging in for a long time. Like tonight, I had pizza.

Other than my weight, I'm in good health. No diabetes, no sleep apnea, no pre-existing conditions, no medications (except birth control).

Sooo, anyone else not on a pre-op diet?

Im post op now but my surgeon didnt do a pre op diet either. Ive read that surgeons do it to shrink the liver so it is not in the way during the surgery. I asked my surgeon about it and he said that he didnt care about shrinking the liver because he just used one staple to stitch it out of the way during the procedure and sauterized it after and never had a problem. I was on liquids only the day before my surgery but I think that is a normal surgery thing not a sleeve thing.

Yeah, I was planning on being on liquids the day before as well. Just wanted to know who else wasn't on one. Good to know I'm not crazy. Phew! Thanks!

My doctor required me to lose 13 lbs before scheduling my surgery. I lost 17 lbs. and my surgery is Tuesday August 27th. I do not have to do a pre op diet, but if I hadn't lost the 13 lbs I would have been on a 2 week liquid diet prior to surgery. I have been eating at my favorite restaurants this week, but still trying to keep the calories as low as possible. Good luck with your surgery!

It's best to do Clear Liquids the day before to make sure there's nothing left in or anywhere near your stomach. I only had to do the day before as well. :)

When I was working with the first doctor to get the band, they were like "Eat whatever you want! Gain weight!" But my current doctor, who I trust much more, has put me on a strict diet. "Protein, vegetables, and water!" she said.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your responses. I think I'll definetly do clear liquids the day before, too!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
