Insurance requirements

Recommended Posts

I am so upset and confused I could scream! Last night I couldn't sleep so I decided to go through my insurance coverage more thoroughly. I have 42 BMI along with CAD. i have had 2 heart attacks and am trying to get myself right before the third one takes my life. About.a year and a half ago, i started seeing a nutritionist and a personal trainer. 4 months and nearly a thousand dollars later and i was lucky to lose 17 lbs. so I gave up. When I went to see that nutritionist I was already considering WLS but thought I would give it one last ditch effort. Now I started the process going so far as to have the psyche eval all done, my first gastro appt tomorrow and the pulmo appt two days after that. Now after reading more thoroughly i see that my ins requires a three month Weight loss program that thoroughly documents exercise, meals and progress. I will call the surgeons office to speak with the nutritionist and see how this works. I am thinking I already wasted time on the psyche eval and will be wasting my time on the gastro appt tomorrow as well as the pulmo on wed. I am so upset it isnt funny (did i say this aleady?)

I know I should have read the info more thoroughly so this is all on me, it just doesn't make the disappointment any easier!

Just a thought: get a letter from your doctor stating ALL of the programs you have tried in your lifetime. State that he supervised you on the last attempt...or the nut..whichever one. Then you yourself type up exactly what you did during that time. You can find forms online. List the month, weight, weught loss or gain from prev. Month, bmi, height, diet goals, exercise goals, diet suggestions. And title it three minth diet progress. List all that you did! It might work!

That is a great Idea. The weight loss requirement states that it had to be in the last 12 months which it wasn't. I will see what the NUT suggests when I call her tomorrow. I would hate for the steps I have taken thus far to be for naught.

Thanks!

My insurance states 6months. However when i went to the consultation they had found out it could be previous diets. So i was good to go. It's worth asking.

Me too. I have my last dietician visit Wednesday. Make sure you do a full 90 days. My husband went through a hell of a process last month getting approval. We went through 2 denials with him. I am on my first denial. They want things too the "T". The correct wording from you primary care physician, the exact wording from your phsy eval. No less then 90 days of dietician visits. Just be thorough. Message me if you need any help!!!!!

I would call the insurance coordinator working with you at the doctors office.

I called the NUT and she said seeing her qualified as a well documented WL program. I had a couple of blank sheets of daily logs for exercise and food journal so I enlarged them at work and made 90 copies to document EVERYTHING! And my 3 months will be up 9/21. I did end up canceling my gastro and pulmo appts till the 3 months are up. Thanks all for the advice. I feel much much better

how do we know just what is the exact correct wording? my pcp seems totally unfamiliar with what I need from him, I will have to practically write it myself and see if he will sign it

From my understanding, It has to say you are cleared for surgery and that he/she recommends you for surgery and that you are a good candidate.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
