Can someone explain why eating and drinking at the same time is forbidden?

Recommended Posts

Lots of good answers and advice. I am aware of not drinking and eating at the same time' date=' I just do it in small to medium amounts, and nothing happens that others have mentioned. No running to the bathroom or throwing up. So I really had no reason to change that habit. But I knew it wasn't what I was supposed to be doing.[/quote']

Just out of curiosity. You trusted the surgeon to knock you out and remove 85% of a healthy stomach. Why would you second guess or presume you know better than his/her medical advice postop?

I HAVE to wait at least 30 minutes because it hurts really bad if I drink too close to eating. It feels like I'm having a heart attack!

I am having trouble separating eating from drinking. Can someone explain to me why we are told not to do this? I need convincing at this point.

@Amanda Rae, out of curiosity I am wondering why your signature panel which says “If You Propose To Speak, Always Ask Yourself, Is It True, Is It Necessary, Is It Kind.” yet you post the opposite. Your response was neither kind or necessary.

Well I guess everyone is different .

In my case my Doctor did mention not to do both at the same time.

Me all hard head did try , and it get me nausea .

I ask my doctor why?

And he reply , " if you put solids in a bottle and after that put liquids , what will happens ?

answer is ... Solids will go up and liquids will fill up all the apace .

That's why the nauseas.

Um...there is no malabsorption...no re routing of the intestines at all...just not able to eat as much...one of the reasons I chose this surgery. As far as drinking with eating...it does wash some of the food down faster...so you can eat more sooner. In the beginning I didn't listen to this and got very sick a few times and learned my lesson. Now almost two years out I can eat and drink a little bit at the same time...but I do notice that when I do this I am able to fit more in. Good luck!

Congrats on reaching your goal I had surgery on 6/21 I'm down 18 lbs its seems fast :) I have 100 to go :( I know it's not easy and I get happy when I hear that people get to goal :) I'm going on vacation Florida Saturday and I start my purée stage :( have to do what I have to do any suggestions ?

It was honest, though. And we all need a dose of honest. Don't fight the plan... We all want you to SUCCEED. This is a small behavioral change that can help you!

If you eat meat (I don't), I have heard lots of people say that they like the Wendy's chili while on the road. You could blenderize it or just be sure to chew it really, really well and eat slowly. You could also do mashed potatoes, but you are better off focusing on Protein. Soups are great during the puree phase. I am a vegetarian and I really like the Morningstar protein products--the vegetarian meatballs and vegetarian Breakfast "sausage" especially. Those early post-op seem to find that they set better than animal protein and they are easy to heat up if you are going to have a fridge and microwave. I like to heat the protein "meat"balls with a little ricotta and marinara plus some parm and/or mozz cheese (just a bit for a protein and flavor boost). Also, Greek yogurt is a great source of protein during the puree stage. You can add half a scoop of Protein Powder to boost the protein. Laughing Cow soft cheese wedges are a lifesaver too. You can also do refried Beans topped with some cheese. Even Taco Bell has them if you need to do fast food while traveling. Good luck and have a good vacation!

I didn't think my question was particularly unkind either. It was very direct, but not unkind.

I will have to agree to disagree with the OP on that particular matter.

Hi. Great video! I have been sneaking some sips with meals -- to "wash things down." After watching this video, I thought I would actually try not sipping with meals and waiting the 30 minutes after a meal before drinking.

So, iPhone, clock, timer on, set to 30 minutes after I finish a meal. No drink with meal, and stop drinking 15-30 BEFORE a meal to allow liquid to clear my tummy before eating. You know what -- I actually ate less! I could not eat the same size portion that I ate before, when I was "sipping."

Who knew that the advice to not drink while eating and waiting until 30 minutes after had a purpose? It's so easy to slip up!

It makes me nauseous and when I burp after drinking I spit up food like a baby, GROSS! I can take a sip but if I take gulps then usually I will spit up food. I rarely eat and drink. What I learned is to drink before the meal so that I'm not thirsty soon after eating.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
