Hi all, I am Cindy and I live in Idaho. I have been following a Dr supervised diet for 6 months which ended June 18th. I have met with my surgeon and he says I am a great candidate for surgery. Yesterday was my appt with psych and dietician and now I am waiting for them to send everything in for preauthorization to my insurance. I have bcbs of Oregon. I am super nervous and have a surgery date of July 29th but I was put on a pretty strict diet from now until then. And then I am on a liquid diet from the 19th to the 29th... I am worried that just like every other diet I have ever had I will fail... How do they expect someone who can't follow diets to save their life to stay on a liquid diet that long. I'm just scared.... But I will keep reading and watching videos on YouTube to keep me away from food... Wishing you all luck on your journey!!!

You can do this! I tried to remind myself to think "big picture" on the pre-op liquid diet. The first few days were very hard, but after that, excitement for the surgery kicked in. Here I am...8 months later and 90 lbs lighter. Best. Decision. Ever.!

Hi Cindy! Welcome!!

I agree, I always found that focusing on the Big picture/ end point would get me through. The 10 days won't be easy but in the grand scheme of things, its only 10 days. Don't let your inability to follow a diet like this before sabotage you. You can do it, keep telling yourself you can and commit to the changes. Everyone has different doctor instructions, you need to trust in and follow what your doctor ordered and try not to allow yourself to be lulled into a feeling of "so and so cheated and they are fine" type of mentality. I have read of some doctors who will no go forward with the surgery if you don't follow orders, and I have read of folks pigging out until the night before. What works for one does not work for all. Trust your doctor. It is not forever, it is 10 days, and you can do it.

If you need encouragement-- post, Private message, whatever you need to get you through. There is ALWAYS someone here that understands what you are going through.

Best of luck to you, keep us posted.

Hey there! The preop diet does suck for the first few days. But it does get better. Everyone told me before I started it and of course it was true! By the last few days of my preop diet it felt so liberating that I had done it! Also, I felt like I was better prepared for my post surgery diet. During the two week preop, I dealt with some of the head hunger. And I lost 10 pounds in my preop when it took me 6 weeks to lose the previous 6 pounds lost. My surgeon was pleased with my weightloss on the preop and said "great! That will make operation this easier." Hang in there and you can do it if I could ;)

Thanks for the advice. I love how supportive everyone is. I have been obsessed with reading stories and now I will need that kind of support. I am sure I will be posting questions and needing advice.

The difference between a diet and the pre-op liquid requirement is that the pre-op liquid "diet" is a requirement. No if's and's or but's about it. It's there for a particular reason - to shrink your liver. If you don't do it, you are adding risk into your surgery. No one wants to add a nicked liver to the recovery. You can't think of it as a "diet" where you can end up going off track. After the first couple days, you won't even think about it and if you do think of food, consider the risk you are adding to your surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
