Looks vs. Health...looks 1 health 0

Recommended Posts

After reading pages and pages on a previous topic about "regretting this whole thing," the OP repeated over and over about doing this for her health....not looks.

Am I the only person who did this to look good? Yes, the health benefits are WONDERFUL...no arguments there. But I went into this because I wanted to look better..which in turn makes me feel better...physically and mentally.. Maybe it's my age...60...but the closer I get to the end of my life...the more I wanted to end things looking the best I can. My biggest fear is that people would file by my casket saying..."she never did lose that weight.". Lol!

I think people do it for different reasons. I want to have surgery because I feel awful, have back pains, high blood pressure & cholesterol. Looking good is a bonus! I don't think it's wrong to want to look and feel good.

I know a certain Texan here that started a thread months ago asking who did this for vanity sake?

So you are not alone I know that.

I think all of us want to "look good" whatever that means to the individual, don't you think?

That being said, I did this for health so I can be healthy, live life and get off of medications.

But that doesn't mean I don't want to look my best too.

Besides...would we really devote so much forum space to talk about plastics and being a size 6 if we didn't care about looks.

For the record...I do care about my health...more so now at age 60. But damn, I want to look good, too!

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be hot - even in your 50's and 60's - I know that when I was younger, I thought, who cares what i'll look like at 50, i'll be close to death. Now that I know that life doesn't end at 50, I want to take control of my body and do everything possible to keep it healthy and fit. My husband has been taking me to task for years over my health. Now I want to outlive him.

As my name implies...I want to wear jeans again, ive nit worn them in over 13 yrs, I'm tired of elastics, I want to wear single digits and I don't want to go on bp meds nd cholesterol meds that my doc says I need. I want the whole entire package!! I already love myself, just not what ive done to myself and now I'm going to try and do something good for myself, so that I can SEE THE GOOD on the outside as well:). Gl to us all, whatever the reason;). Dee Dee

You could have fooled me that you were 60!!!!

I did it for 60% look and 40% health. I don't have any health problems now but I am terrified to get them. I know I will always have some body issues but I have never in my adult life been skinny. So it is a dream of mine.

You do look great! I did a double-take at your pic when you said you were 60.

I did my sleeve more as a preventative thing. I had pre diabetes, my bp was borderline, my family has a history of heart problems, high cholesterol etc. I am only 30 and i didn't want these things to become full blown issues. Besides that i couldn't play with my son or do the things i wanted to with him because of the weight. But i think that looking good always plays a part in the decision whether it's a major factor or just an added bonus. How we look often dictates how we feel, and the better we look the better we feel about ourselves. As others have said, there is nothing wrong with wanting to look good, especially when we feel like we haven't for a long long time.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
