Drain site, no stitches?

Recommended Posts

I had my drain removed today and couldn't watch what was going on... Just took a shower and realize I have a hole where it was. Is it typical to not have stitches to close it up? If so, any secrets to getting it to heal an close up quickly? And keeping clean? Doc said just soap in the shower and all I can envision is soap getting inside and some gross things happening after that ... Totally creeped out.

Thanks for any wisdom you can provide to keep my imagination from driving me nuts.

Mine closed by the next morning when I woke up, but the doctor told me it could take a few days. Just follow doctors instructions.. my instructions were the same as yours and no issues at all!

Mine was open and just a light gauze over it. Look horrid, but healed to a teeny little scar

Yes, that's normal! They can't stitch it because that would simply "trap" any bacteria in the wound. Mine is still a bit open and I'm 16 days post-op. It was a pretty large drain tube. :\ I just leave it alone unless I'm going out...then, it's right under my bra strap so I put either gauze or a Band-Aid on it with some antibiotic ointment.

I had superglue-type stuff on most of my incisions, but no stitches or glue on my drain site. It healed fine- such a small incision.

Mine was just left open, I was told it would close within 24 hours & it did.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
