Calling All Sixties!

Hi Joanne,

I'm new here, too....just starting the process. I don't see my surgeon until Aug 20th. I've talked to my insurance and they will pay when I meet all the medical criteria. I'm 63 and I took early retirement, last year. My main reason for wanting the surgery is medical, too. I have severely high blood pressure and all the med side effects are killing me, I feel like I have no life. Plus I have other issues on top of that, too. I love to travel, too and I haven't been able to do anything since I retired....I feel like life is passing me by. I'm very anxiously awaiting the appt with the surgeon after he returns from a 2wk vacation in August. Least, I'll know he is nice and rested. LOL

I posted on here 2 yrs ago. Would like to hear from all that were on here before and how you are doing now 2 yrs later. I got to goal in 18 months. I went up and down 3 lbs for a long time. Then I let sugar back in and chips and the bad habits returned. At this point I have gained 18 lbs back. I need to go back to basics. I went from a size 24 down to a 14 and have a walk in closet of clothes that are tight now. Very depressing.

I have posted to see how others have done after all this time. I hope better than me.

Hi Mokee

I hear you about how hard it is to keep the weight off. I'm 17 mo's out and go up and down 4 lbs. I stopped loosing weight at 30 lbs and have been like this for a yr. I'm stuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Getting my body to release any weight is almost impossible. I do Tai Chi 4-6 hrs a week and go to the pool 3- 5 pm's a week. My Dr suggested I loose 20 more lbs. I would love to but the "hunger" seems to win out.

Is anyone else in the same position?

Has anyone experienced this and if so how did you start to loose weight again?

Any suggestions?

Sherry

I just discovered this group and am hoping that by communicating with others in my age group will make my continuing weight loss more successful and encouraging. I was sleeved 12/30/2014 and have lost 65lbs so far.

I'm almost 70 years old and a 5'5" woman.

I was sleeved 8/18/2014. Highest weight was 235 (lost 20 pounds pre-op), weighed 216 day of surgery, then lost another 65 pounds post-op to reach goal (150 pounds) at 8.5 months post-op. I've since lost another 7 pounds and have been floating for several months at 143-144.

My maintenance calorie budget is 1750 calories, and I usually hit 100 grams of Protein each day.

Honestly, I thought the whole thing was easy-peasy. I move, move, move. I walk, go to the gym, yoga class, and clean the house like a new bride. During the weight loss phases, I ate pretty clean (protein, veggies, fruits, whole grains). Now, I'm allowed a few treats, but do not go hogwild.

I plan and track all my food / drink on My Fitness Pal. I wear a Fitbit, which is quite motivating to keep moving.

Frankly, I think, on average, older folks have an easier time of it with WLS than younger folks. We have more discipline, more patience, and are motivated by health goals, not dress size goals. Although that bit's nice, too. ;)

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. :)

I find that my weight loss has slowed just in the past six weeks. I have stalled for the past five weeks. For a couple of weeks due to a family situation i did very little exercising. I know that when I don't move around enough, it slows the weight loss, not drinkig my daily 64 ounces of Water will also slow it down. I have heard so many great things about Fitness Pal , I use Fat Secret.

What a challenging year you have had! Please accept my sympathy n the passing of your husband. Two major surgeries in one year, my you must be very strong, both emotionally and physically. My sleeve plan dictates no sugar or only have sugar when it is 13g or less per serving. Sugar can slow your weight loss, have you tried to use an alternative? I was sleeved in December 2014. It is challenging at times to keep track of everything, but so important, it keeps you thinking about what you are eating. Another suggestion is to increase your activity, that may kick start your metabolism. I have been stuck for awhile, at my weight, but I am not allowing it to get to me. I am having a hip replacement replacement done on October1st. Due to my implant failure my activity has become limited, so I will be concerned about my weight.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
