Avoiding burnout

Recommended Posts

I've been an exercise fiend several times in my life. Ill get really into it and about 3-4 months in it fizzles out.

Well here I am, super into it and scared that ill burn out on it. I'm keeping it fresh and being creative with my exercise. Biking, walk/jogging, walk DVD, DDP yoga, t tapp etc. I use a heart rate monitor and love watching how many calories I'm burning an then challenging myself, etc.

How else do you keep yourself from getting bored? I'm not joining a gym until winter, I plan on taking full advantage of at least the weekends in summer. Also, we can't really hike in Missouri. At least not near me. It's a bummer really.

What's your thing? How do you keep motivated?

Find new goals to work towards, like a specific race or challenge. A group of us are preparing for a 5K mud run (obstacle run) in October. When that is over, I will find my next goal/challenge - perhaps something completely different. It helps to have a goal and a focus to keep you motivated! Just be sure to find a new goal or focus as soon as you complete one.

When I was thin many years ago, I also got into triathloning because I got burned out on just running - the training and racing variety was good to help keep me motivated.

Finding a friend or a group to exercise with really helps to keep you accountable!

And if you can afford to, buy some new, super-cute workout clothes! Sometimes that helps to get me up and going.

It'll be different this time because you won't be able to eat the calories back and you will get results! What I am going to do differently is not give myself more than one day of rest a week. I don't want to lose motivation either and when something gets too easy or repetitive, I'll challenge myself and switch it up. Don't expect to fail. Failure isn't an option anymore!

"Amytug"........is there anything in particular that you enjoy about the gym? I know the working out from home thing works for a lot of people and is very convenient, but sometimes getting out to a gym or a busy (with other people) place to walk can be more fun. How about walking around the mall? Just wonder if it would be more interesting/fun to get away from the house to do your exercise...other than the walking close to your house? Just grasping at a few things here. How about a workout partner, do you have one? Maybe the socializing (in moderation :P ) will give you the motivation to look forward to the exercise? Good luck and try to be as creative as you can!

Thank you all for your ideas and encouragement-

Swimmom- I'm having a hard time finding time to d c25k and don't have good shoes, but that is a goal of mine eventually. I'd love to do any of those fun runs!! Probably next summer.

I take my kids to walks in the lark with me and I'm kindof a loner. I think I push myself harder when I'm only focusing on me and my burn and my breathing etc. yanno? I may invite someone on days I need extra motivation to get out an about tho.

Oh new clothes!! I was just planning in that next weekend. Woohoo! Do they make anything hot pink in xl? What style/brand do you recommend?

Nicolanz- you're right, it IS different this time! I allow myself one day or less a week off. What do you do for exercise?

Other guy whose name I've forgotten- :D

I ride w the kids around the neighborhood. Walks at the park. Lots of hills there! I take my kids one at a time. (There are 6) thy provide entertainment and sometimes we race etc. hehe

About the gym. I have figured ill join in winter or when it gets too hot out to enjoy moving outside. It's on the to do list. I LOVE working out at the gym but I don't enjoy being there when there are a lot of people there. "/ lol maybe I should call and see when they are least busy. Years ago I went at 5 am before work. LOVED IT. now that I'm a stay at home mom mornings aren't an option. planning the gym though, does motivate me. By the time im a little bored with home workouts ill have the gym. Then when winter is over ill have home workouts again. I hope I find a way to make it work!!

I have a collection of Bob Harper DVDs! Aren't we the pair. Lol. I have all the biggest loser DVD (very helpful 5-7 years go), a cardio DVD, a weight lifting DVD (never really got into this one), a yoga DVD (need to spend more time on this) and a strength training DVD (my current focus with Bob - loving it mixed in with my other workouts). Love his style of training. I am sure it is very complimentary to Jillian. The cool part is a lot of these are cheap from TJ Max, Ross and other discount stores.

To keep myself motivated I set outlandish goals. Before I could finish a 20 mile bike ride I registered to do a 100 mile charity ride. I knew that I would have to push myself to get to that point. I am also a strong self motivator I lift alone, bike alone and run alone. I challenge my self to get a better time per mile, go longer distances push more weight. I use a heart rate monitor and the digifit program to track my stats. I have progressed to being able to complete up to 66miles on the bike in a single day. When I feel like I want to quit I have a picture from right before I was diagnosed with Diabetes that I keep on my phone, I look at that and know I don't want to go backwards. It drives me to keep moving forward to become a better, healthier, stronger version of myself.

That was awesome and woah you're doing fantastic!!!

I have more questions for all- how do you know when you're doing too much/getting obsessive? Do I have to take a day off? If I'm working out pretty hard every day right now (I also have a heart rate monitor and wouldn't live without it now) if I stall will I have to push EVEN harder?

I LOVE exercise!!! A few weeks ago I hated it. Go figure.

I am not an exercise lover. Not now, not ever. But I do get up and walk with friends as often as 4 days per week. I have to exercise first thing in the morning. I simply won't do it later. And I'm planning to also start taking a morning exercise class with a buddy. I have a good friend that does exercise class in the evening, but I just won't do it.

I buy exercise clothes at Target since I got in non-extended sizes, and I bought at Walmart when I still wore woman's sizes. Target has cute stuff in XL through XS I have worked my way down to S now. I'll never be an XS again. Too tall and too old.

I am one of those people that I can never give it enough. I try to do something atleast six days a week. Your body will tell you when you are doing to much. Not paying attention I fell off my bike, i clip in to the peddels and forgot I was clipped in tried to put the foot that was attached to the bike down and it was still attached you get the picture, I banged my knee up pretty good. I kept going I didn't listen to my body. I haven't ridden in like a week because of it trying to allow for it to heal.

I have learned, as i have lost weight, to listen to the queues my body gives me. It can be tuff some times I like to push myself. I take atleast 1 day off. I go 110% every time.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
