6 days post-op and struggling with fluid and protein

I am desperately reaching out for help here. I was sleeved on May 8th and I am struggling bigtime. I can't get all of my fluids and protein in. The fist few days home, I called the surgeons office everyday and they told me that I was having a hard time swallowing because I was still swollen. The swelling has gone down and I can now swallow okay but I can barely drink clear fluids let alone protein. I've only had about 3o oz of water today and about 20 oz of protein. I don't know what else to do. Everything I try to drink makes me full and sick to my stomach. I had REALLY bad diarreah and the surgeons office told me to add a small amount of cream of wheat with mashed bananas to bind me up and it worked but I still can't get my fluids in. I'm really starting to feel light headed, dizzy, sick to my stomach and I fear that I am dehyderating. Any suggestions? I pray that this will get better soon.

I am sorry you are having such a hard time. I had my revision on May 6th and I am not having any of those problems so please keep your Dr. informed. It is important to try and get your liquids in before the protein this early on so try to find something you like and sip sip sip. I had to drink apple juice 100% natural because water wasn't gong down well. I also drank herbal decaf tea. Good prayers are coming your way.

Thank you so much Sherrypep. I need all the prayers and strengh that I can get. Water is not working well for me so I will try something else. Thanks for the suggestion to try diffeent fluids.

Water is discusting so i used crystal light

Try putting some crystal light in you water, this helped me some, water was very heavy to me. You might try skim milk, that worked for me as well. My doctor said not to worry about the protein in the beginning that would come in time. I started getting all of my liquids in at about a month out. Good luck.

I was sleeved on 5/10 I also have had no problems so far..what I am doing is taking it an hour at a time sipping away.. sometimes anxiety can be a horrible thing just remind yourself how bad u want it and need this it will get better.

Try decaf teas. Let it cool so it's luke-warm. I also liked Sobe Water. Concentrate on getting the fluids first right now. Staying hydrated is of primary importance. Hope it starts getting easier for you soon.

pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4

sugar free powerade, sugar free popcicles, weak tea, crystal light, mio etc. all might help. remember to just sip too.

Great advice everyone. It sounds like I need to focus more on myfluids and not as much on my protein so much right now. I will try to make some adjustments and see how it goes. I guess I just expected to be better and back to work by now. When is or did everyone else go back to work???

i was super nauscious after surgery (5/6). my surgeon told me i the hospital to drink half water/apple juice because it's easier to ge down and it worked or me. i also take really small drinks. i've been getting protein by putting u jury protein powder in broth. i hope you get lots of great nswers here, and you start feeling better soon!!!!

take small sips constantly. i'm trying to type on a wonky android, and it's not going well. sorry about the spelling.

With the support and info given here it has made me stronger I know how bad I want and need this a few bumps along the way will only make us fight harder for the light at the end of the tunnel.. thanks everyone for the wonderful support..

well it sounds like you have a really great disposition which will carry you through. keep us posted!

Sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk. I'm a May 8th sleeve and after the second day things picked up for me. Try a different protein, Crystal light lemonade or iced tea. This will pass soon...
