We were advised not to (everyone's program is different, but I think the no straw is pretty universal). You suck in additional air with a straw.

Yea, I think this is one of those things where everyone gets a different answer depending on the personal preference of their surgeon.

My surgeon advised me not to use one for the first 6 months and then to try it afterwards and see if it hurt. I tried at about 4 months and TRUST ME you will know if you're not ready for it. It does not feel nice! Ive been using straws since about month 8 but only if its necessary. I try to avoid them in general.

I used one at about a month out without thinking about it.. no ill effects.. but to be honest, I was never a straw user.

I used a straw after surgery while I was in the hospital and have used one ever since. My surgeon said nothing at all about not using straws but a lot of surgeons tell you not to use one.

My team says yes, especially if it allows more Water. Keep in mind that you can drink faster and the ouchies from that.

I agree, you can drink a lot more and faster with a straw. My dr said not for 6 weeks. I think I did at 5 and have ever since. I like it because I can get more than the 64 oz recommended when I use straws. See what your dr says tho because they're all different :)

I always preferred a straw but I definitely swallow a lot more air when I use one.

I've been using a straw and no problems at all.. It's a comfort thing.. if you use one and you feel gassy and like you're drinking too fast then maybe you're not ready.

I was told no more straws due to the air that can fill in your stomach. /shrug. I'm not a big straw drinker anyways

I was told no as well, but I started using one about 3 weeks ago. I'm only 8 weeks into this. I've had no problems at all :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
