Can't Drink Water At All

Recommended Posts

I have not been able to tolerate Water at all....it disgusts me to even look at the bottle sitting on my desk. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do? Will drinking G2 Gatorade be an equal replacement if I can tolerate that?

I am a week out and also want to know how to know if I am drinking enough water....I do not want to get a leak by drinking too much

Same thing happened to me and I LOVED Water prior to surgery. I can tell you it gets better. I am now able to drink water again and back to drinking and loving it. This didn't happen until I was like 6 weeks out. I was sleeved 1.11.13. Good luck to you!

I had no desire for Water initially, and used Vitamin Water Zero instead, it was recommended by my NUT. As long as your Fluid is no/low calorie and Decaf you should be fine. Some other options:

Crystal Light

Unsweetened decal Ice Tea

You should be getting in 64oz a day or more. Sip all day. It will get easier to drink as you progress.

Good luck!

Try poweraid zero instead of G2. It has less carbs than G2. I would suggest getting Isopure. It is 2 grams of Protein in each oz. It counts as liquid and protein.

Some people like to use Mio. They're zero calorie drops you add to your Water to flavor it. Crystal Light has something similar, I believe. As for me, I simply add lemon and cucumber slices to a pitcher of water and keep it in the refrigerator. It not only adds flavor, it's great for detoxing your entire system! :)

Getting a leak by drinking too much Water is improbable unless you slam it in quickly to the point of extreme pain. Drinking it a sip at a time with adequate intervals in between is the ticket.

I still find Water tough to take sometimes at over a year out. I still haven't figured out why it is ok at one time and causes heartburn another time.

Contrary to what you would think, lemons lower acid. Reflux is a common ailment for sleevers including me. Your idea of lemon and cucumber slices in a pitcher of water is good juju! :)

I wasn't able to drink Water for about 2 months for some odd reason... also Gatorade and all the other light drinks I turned to fruit which is probably not a good idea but I just needed hydration watermelon is like 90% water... also any liquid u can tolerate as long as it's not a lot of sugar or cafiene... u can dialute low calorie or low sugar drinks with water to make it even less

Thanks for sharing this link! I guess now I know why sucking on a lemon wedge when a meal has me feeling ishy is my go-to cure. Even prior to being sleeved, I swore by lemon-cucumber Water but after being sleeved and seeing an article about the detoxing bonuses, I was extra hooked! Oh and for a little more oomph some like a bit of fresh mint. :)

Thank you all so much! I can't tolerate the propel zero or crystal light...so far so good on the G2 but we will see what happens I'm just sick of feeling dizzy and I'm sure it's caused by dehydration

One thing that I'll say about any kind of food/drink aversions is that if you have gotten nauseous and vomited after consuming something, your brain can at a primitive level associate the bad reaction to the smells and tastes, and the mere smell or taste can make you fee ill later - it's an evolutionary defense mechanism. I would try overcoming it by just drinking very small amounts, a few sips of Water, and then very gradually increasing that over weeks of time.

Have you tried to add crystal light to it? That's why I drink with my Water and it's only 5 Calories. I can't drink water unless it's freezing with ice cubes in it.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
