Actual vs. Insurance Cost

Recommended Posts

This morning, I got the phone call from pre-registration wanting my money.

The actual cost of my surgery as billed will be $63,201.

Insurance allows $18,909.

So I'm on the hook for my deductible ($500) and 20% coinsurance to a max of $1500. I've already met quite a bit of that, so they just took a grand from me and I will pay the rest when the bill comes and all the dust settles with other claims that are pending.

I was shocked at what the actual bill will vs. insurance though, and I know I've seen other people ask for those numbers, so here are mine. :)

Insurance is crazy. If the hospitals, healthcare providers and insurance companies would work together instead of trying to screw each other, everyone would benefit.

I am in the Dallas area and self pay. My surgeon charges $12,200 for the procedure, covers 2 nights in hospital, pre op labs, OR and all follow ups. Although, I'm sure that if it was insurance it would be much more.

Right??

I am very grateful for insurance. I know some people spends tens of thousands more than my measly $2k. I am very very grateful.

Just saw my bill this weekend. 49500 just for the surgery. Then another 500 a night in hospital. Over 3k for anesthesiologist and another 2k in random stuff, X-rays and the like. Unreal. It the. Shows the adjusted down for being in network, less than half. It is all just a game. They mark it up so when they adjust down it is what they would normally charge. Gotta love the system. But ya, thank goodness for insurance.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
