Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

OMG if you're being serious... I only said that half-joking. No way a completely anonymous person from the internet would offer me a ride! That's just too kind!

Gosh, you guys are amazing! :tongue2: :)

Funny you should say that! You'd be surprised what can happen with "people you've met on the internet" -- there is a trust here that can't be found other places.

Mini-Girl, 156 is not so bad. Was that a fasting test? Doc rarely to do the GTT anymore. The ADA uses several other ways of diagnosing Type 2 DM.

1. 2 random fastings greater than 126

2. 2 random blood sugars greater than 200. (these are not fastings)

3. 2 hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

One fasting greater than 126 doesn't mean you're diabetic. Remember that many toothpastes have a lot of glucose in them. IF I check my fasting after I've brushed my teeth, my glucose is always high - i.e. 160's. If I check prior to brushing my teeth it's 80 or less.

Anything taken by mouth can affect your glucose, even if it's just meds with Water - a fasting can be altered easily.

Hang tight and wait and see whta the OGTT says. Weight loss makes a big difference too Mini. As you lose weight, you sugars will improve greatly.

I'm glad your lytes are okay. I'm hoping things improve. I love that you're Puff Mama, but you'll always be my Puff Mama to My Heavy DD!

Wow, I had no idea that toothpaste could made a difference. I hope that's all it was. I have been loitering in the 120's (fasting) for the past few years and had hoped to see a drop. I was really disappointed.

I think the doc is being extra careful since I have diabetes in both sides of my family so the genetic loading is very strong. Darn those genes.

I'll always be your puff mama. :)

Okay, kind of a drive-by . . .

First of all, Brandy, sending lots of positive vibes your way. Please post about DH when you can.

Got my blood tests back . . . electrolytes are great. Kidneys and liver are swell. My glucose was 156!!!!! I am soooooo bummed. So so so bummed. It's never been that high! I was sure it would be down since I've started losing weight. So now I have to go in and have an oral GTT . . . diabetes is rampant in my family and I have been teetering on the edge for several years. Damn.

But here's some good news . . . a long time ago I think I posted about how my son and I were interviewed for a short little informational video about this organization for people with schizophrenia . . . anyhoo, the woman who is the head of the international organization called today to say that our story would be highlighted in the video and they want us to come to New York and speak at some special function at the UN! I will only speak for like 5 minutes after they show the video, but it's pretty cool!!!

Sorry to be selfish and just talk about myself here, but I was really excited about the UN thing and really bummed about the glucose thing and needed to share the good and the bad.:thumbup:

I'm sure what Dee said about non-fasting tests will be the case and you will be just fine:smile2:

Congrats on the video gig! my gosh, the UN!! How impressive:lol:

Well, it is as I suspected with the a-hole neighbors across the alley. They are buying the empty estate house next door for their daughter as I feared. She is my age and a complete beotch. She makes her mom look nice. They are over there cleaning tonight. So it's official-I am now going to be completely surrounded by them. Sigh. I think I may have to throw in the towel and sell my house and move. I don't think I can take being surrounded. I will go insane. Literally. Only I do not have the financial means to move unless I take my husband back. So it is a catch 22 in the worst sense.

But...now that I know for sure that is the reason I got the letter demanding I move the fence...I could really drag this out for a long time if they decide not to drop the issue. My attorney told me if I make them take me to court over it they wouldn't even get a court date until probably December 2009 and they can't sell the house until then. Hopefully their lawyer will convey to them that it is in their best interest to drop it, but if not, I know I can make their lives equally miserable for awhile at least.:tongue2:

Hey, I say go for it! Make their lives a legal nightmare!! Heck, you could probably continue postponing into 2010 the way lawyers work! Don't let them run u out of your home!! Get those foster kids!!

Oh they sound just adorable. what fun names. We have a Scooter Bug at our house, but Scooter Pie just cracks me up.
One of my JRT's is names Scout (after To Kill a Mockingbird), but often we call her Scooter. I had a friend who nicknamed their small male terrier Scooter for the....uh...butt problems:blush:

Great advice! Dee, I am so glad we have a knowledgable medical woman here. Your comments are always so insightful. Thanks:laugh:

Okay, now I need to vent. I have lost nothing (gained .8 yesterday) since the great scales debacle a couple of weeks ago! My body can't still be doing its "starvation" mode after a month of eating this way, can it?? Arghhhh:angry_smile::) Suggestions?

I'm hearin' ya' sister. I have to say, though, when I look back over my data, I tend to stall out for a few weeks then lose 4 or 5 lbs fairly quickly. So I guess my advice would be . . . keep doing what you're doing and be patient. Drink lots of Water. Try to exercise if you can stand it (I hate it but am trying to force myself). The way I look at is this . . . if I keep doing the right things, sooner or later the weight HAS to come off, right? I mean, it would be scientifically impossible for me to continue at this plateau forever. And the same is true for you. Our bodies are susceptible to the laws of nature. It has to work for us sometime.

thanks Deb! You're very sweet! I loved being a Diabetic Educator. It was very enjoyable. After doing NICU for so long and having patients who don't talk - (well, not like we do) it was nice having a patient who could give you feedback... even when it wasn't so positive. I always felt like I was helping them getting to know their condition and helping them gain valuable knowledge, which in turn would help them be successful of living a life free of problems. Knowledge is power.

I wanted to ask if you use any of the online food logs? I use www.fitday.com and it has really opened my eyes. I use it every single day and log everything that enters my mouth. (I know I'm a nerd) I even log in my calcium chews and Fiber chews. Anyway my point is this, it helps me make sure I am getting in enough calories. If you're not, you can stall and it is also possible to get in too many calories of fat without even knowing it. For example yesterday by afternoon I had eaten 52% of my calories from fat. That meant that the rest of the day had to be lean Protein and veggies. It helps me adjust my intake.

Like Mini said, our bodies do strange things and fluctuate a lot. I know mine does. Yesterday morning, I had lost 5.4 lbs over night, but the day before I had gained 3.2. This morning I gained another 3. It's bizarre and a good reason not to weigh everyday, BUT I can't help myself! Like I said before, I am a scale addict! Mix up your calories a little don't stay too low and make sure your fat intake isn't too high. It should remain around 30% of your total calories.

I am looking into financing. Have you shopped around? Who was the easiest to work with? I have applied with surgeryloans.com and been approved, but I haven't heard what there interest rate is. Can you help me? Even though interest rates are partially determined by credit rating is there one out there you recomend?:tongue2::crying:

We decided to just get a signature loan with Wells Fargo. Even though, I hate Wells Fargo  it was super simple. We applied online, got approved and took the paper work in and had the money in savings that day. The interest is around 14% which is terrible:rolleyes2:but still better than some other options. I think our monthly payment is $273 for 48 mths. Plus, if you bank w/them you can get 0.25% deduction if you set up automatic monthly payments.:sneaky:Hope this helps! Good luck! :)

I don't think that's too bad. You do what you have to do to get healthy, right?

I used Capital One check loans to purchase my Highlander from Cost Co. and it was extremely simple. Others might want to look into that. I was approved online within an hour and the check was in the mail. For my surgery, I used the monies I got from my divorce. After 22 years of marriage, I felt this was the best way to end it!

Wasn't it Ozzy Osbourne who threw the ham over the fence at the neighbors?! Just a thought, lol.

Thanks :) They are all very cute and have their own personalities for sure. Chops (Pork Chop) is still not very happy about not being an only child any more so he doesn't play well well with others, with the exception of Trulee. He loves her. One day when it was just the two of them, my daughter came home from work to find Chops standing guard at the opening of his crate. Behind him (in the crate) was every single toy and treat in the entire house. He's a little selfish.

I use Fitday religiously. I'm eating between 800 & 900 calories a day. Is that too many? Too little? I just don't know. My fat intake averages 27%, carbs 24%, and the rest protein. I feel like I'm doing the right things, but MAN am I a slow loser. And I'm a scale addict too. I'll admit it. Every morning as soon as I get out of bed. It's pathetic.

Believe me, I HAVE thought about throwing things at her over the fence (mainly dog poop when I am out there picking it up) but I know for a fact it would not be worth it to get arrested over her. :) (As tempting as it may be...and it is!!!)

That is a fab story. It is my female lab that is a bit selfish (go figure). She often greets me at the door with THREE bones in her mouth. She is just not a one bone kind of gal I guess!

My mom had a snarky neighbor who was a major neat freak so she planted a Catalpa tree (the kind that sheds big, messy seed pods and such) right next to the fence so that every time the wind blew it blew a bunch of messy tree debris into the neighbor's yard. The neighbor finally moved.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
