Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Me too. We're heading to Mexico Saturday morning and I really want to feel better.

Hey, good job on your weight this week! Woohoo!!

Mini! Thanks! I was dragging my ass this afternoon! I almost threw the towel in and said, "forget this!" I worked last night, slept less than an hour because of the light in my room, the stupid construction workers outside my window and being hungry. I finally got out of bed and did my cycling. I had gone swimming when I left the hospital this morning at 730. I don't think I'll do the bike tomorrow -- but I am so bad about returning to working out once I stop or get out of my routine!

I am running on fumes at this point!

I don't know how you work at night. I really don't. It makes me feel kind of sick just thinking about it.

oh believe me, I was so sick feeling this afternoon! I was in tears! I wanted to sleep so badly!

I got a "black out canopy" for my 4 poster bed, but I haven't installed it yet - it just arrived last evening. I'm hoping that will help with the light. Other nurses take Benedryl or Tylenol PM, but I have so many problems with urinary retention I don't want to do those! I worked nights for 10 years while my daughter was in elementary school and I did fine with it. I slept in the guest room which was dark as night and had an overhead fan on to cover the outside noises.

I work again tomorrow night! I hope I make it!

Oh, I hope the blackout curtain helps. I can't take Benedryl or Tylenol PM either cuz it gives me restless legs, so then I really can't sleep. My daughter works 1 night shift and 2 days each week. I don't know how she stands it.

Yeah! About 3 weeks ago, I started a second job. Two days 0730-1700 Monday and Wednesday.... well, then 2 nights Thursday and Friday. I just can't do it. I have got to pick a schedule and stay on it.

Ugh. Okay, that's pretty dreadful. Do you like your daytime job okay though? How long will it be before you can go back on days at the hospital?

I love my daytime job, BUT it pays $10.00 less per hour - which means, I could work 2 night shifts or 4 day shifts a week and make the same money! (night shift has differentials - to make up for the hell of working nights) - so I'm going to quit the day job. I don't have a choice. It will be years before I get back on days. After my daughter leaves for school, I'm going to try to get a traveler's job out of state. I love Colorado, but I hate the winters. I'd love to move to Arizona.

Yeah, that just wouldn't make sense to work for that much less money. Wow, travel nursing would be cool. Do you still get benefits and stuff?

You do get benefits, retirement, 401K, vacation, bonuses.... etc plus housing is paid for.

Jaime, this sounds fantastic! I LOVE edamame. I've made a salad that has edamame and jicame and it's really good too, but this sounds better.

So I made a BIG BAND MISTAKE today. I have been sick all week and had to go teach my classes today so I was searching around the house for some multi-symptom cold medicine. All I could find was Alka Seltzer Cold and Flu. Fine, I thought, plop plop fizz fizz and I chugged it all down. Didn't think about the fact that it is HIGHLY carbonated. I have been in so much pain all day I can't beleive it. It's like the worst gas under my ribs that I've ever had. I can't even take a decent breath. I've been taking gas-x strips and it's starting to help a little but it has been one miserable day. Guess I won't be cheating with soda or beer anytime soon.

I think part of the problem is that I had just eaten. I think the liquid went past the food into my "big" tummy but then I couldn't burp cuz my "little" tummy was full of food. I don't know. But it has been miserable. There was an hour or so when I really thought I was having a heart attack or something. BLAH!!!!

I love edamame!!! But I've never had it that way! I get it at costco and just do it in the oven! It's so good and so good for you!

Thanks for the recipe!

Roasted Edamame Salad ~ YUMMO! After I've prepared the salad I pack it away in the fridge in small single-serving containers. When I go to eat it again, I take it out of the fridge and let it set for 30mins before I eat it, so it's closer to room temperature. That's how I like it! Eating it straight out of the fridge when it's really cold is not as enjoyable for me. Also, when preparing it, I add more oil and vinegar than listed in the recipe, but probably because I use more edamame than called for. The frozen bag of edamame I buy is 3 cups, so I use more corn, oil, and vinegar to compensate.

Mini ~ You poor thing! I can see how you wouldn't realize what you were getting into until you were already in over your head! :tt2: I'm so sorry you felt horrible all day! Hope today you're back in tip-top shape and kicking that cold. It's almost time for Mexico! I'm super jealous!!!

Dee ~ Bless you for being able to do nights and get paid for it! The money sounds fabulous but I don't think I could pull it off. I like my regular schedule, I like my weekends - I'm just so spoiled by my daytime job!

Sooooo, yesterday I almost died, seriously. OK maybe I didn't almost DIE, but I was SOOO scared for about 5 minutes. Like Mini, I've had a terrible cold this week. I've been coughing for pretty much 5 days straight, with barely any reprieve. Yesterday I was sucking on my cough drop, as I've been doing for several days, when I got into this horrible coughing fit. I inhaled sharply and  the cough drop went straight down my throat!! I hadn't been sucking on it long and I knew it was WAY too big to go through the band. I immediately stopped coughing and I didn't swallow at all, causing it to literally lodge in my throat without going down. I didn't know what to do! Swallow is first instinct, but not with the band it isn't! Mind you, I'm sitting at my desk in my office and no one realizes what has just happened to me. I put my hand over my mouth and cough/gag and try like hell to get it up, and after 3 or 4 tries it works - out pops that blasted cough drop. I went into the bathroom and cried for about 5 mins, I was so scared!! I have no idea what would have happened had I actually swallowed that cough drop, but dangit it scared me straight. I will never eat hard candy or cough drops again!!!! Gum is out of the question from here on out!!!

Dee, that sounds like the ideal solution, a little travel and benefits. Sorry to hear about having to make a choice in the job market, but your body and overall mental health wouldn't be able to handle that for too long. Good luck with the sleeping battle.

Mini, whoa, girl, I bet that was a bit scarey! It must truly be the season: I have had a bitch of a cold for three weeks now. Just today am feeling better, better enough to go get a spinal injection in ten minutes:huh2: Problem is the cold started with JL and then I got it; now she is getting another one! She usually is never sick, so this is a rare instance!

Good health to all of you out there suffering.

Mini, the warm weather of Mexico will do wonders for your health. Stay away from the water!:tt2:

Dee, hell yeah do the travel nursing! That sounds fabulous!

Jaime!!! I'm so glad your cough drop came back up. That had to be so scary! I haven't ever thought of that happening. Oh geez.

Deb, what sort of injections are you having in your back? Sorry to hear that you and DW have been ill. There is so much crap going around. Hey, when I first read your warning to stay away from the Water, I was thinking you meant the ocean! I was thinking - "but that's the whole reason we're going"! Hee hee. Too much cold medication (NON carbonated today, thank you).

Mini:They are steroid injections for bulging discs and other related back pains. I have had one before and it helped tremendously. Hopefully, this will work without having to have a second or third one. Plus I love the percocet!

Thanks! BUT I have to be honest, if I had any way of NOT working nights, I would go for it! Money or no money, it's just not worth what it does to your health!

I remember once, I was in Haiti and I choked on something I was eating. It was during a blackout. No lights, only candles and we were eating. I couldn't breath, I couldn't talk and I could feel my fingers tingling. My MIL got up and hit me on the back, up it came and I survived! It was truly the scariest time of my life!

I think traveling would be a blast! I hate to leave the clinic - I love it there, but the money just isn't enough to make my bills if I can truly pick up more hours in the NICU. I have to install my black out canopy when I get home in the am. I was so sleepy driving home this morning, it scared me. My reflexes were very slow and I kept drifting off when I was stopped in traffic. It seriously is just like driving drunk, which I have never done - and I hope to not drive that sleepy again! I was able, thank God to sleep today. I slept about 4 hours. Woke up with the stupid leaf blowers outside my window! DAMNIT! AND then I was able to fall back asleep around 3pm and wake up in time for work at 4pm. Life goes on...
Every time I see that "Size 9 in '09", I just think please, 199 in '09! My don't we have different perspectives!

I am with you Deb! I hope for 199 in 09! Hmmm, I wonder if you and I should put that in our signatures!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
