When will pain at stomach incision site go away?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was March 12. I've done pretty well, had tons of gas and Constipation during that first week. Overall, I have been feeling pretty good except for the pain I have under/at the site for the stomach incision. It hurts so bad when I turn or move certain ways. I have a very difficult time getting myself up from a laying down position in the bed. I am just wondering how long this pain will last? I just keep thinking it should be gone by now. I wear a compression wrap thing when I sleep at night to provide support, but that even with that, I still have pain when I move certain ways.

Does this pain happen for most people for so long? Any advice or ideas are appreciated!! Thanks!

I only remember pain for the first week. Occasionally, when I turned I would feel a pain, but off the pain meds after about 6 days.

I didn't have any pain after the JP drain was removed. Only took 1 pain pill and 1 week post op laid hard wood floor in my living room. Im a weirdo though and my pain tolerance is crazy high. Did you talk to your dr about the discomfort? It may be gas. have you been walking? been walking 2+ miles a day and taking my PPD and maalox on a reg basis. Hope things get better.

Thanks you guys! I have spoken to my physician about it. They say that everyone heals differently and for me to remember it's a major surgery and it will take a while to recover. I'll just keep walking and taking pain meds as needed until I get completely better I guess.

The pain meds are the key. Some people get weirded out over it....but if you take them and it helps then you are able to move better. More movement equals more blood flow...which equals faster recovery. Everyone heals differently and feels pain differently. You will do fine! Good luck! :)

My pain lasted about a week, I didn't take my pain meds by maybe 3 times that week, I just didn't feel I needed it. Now, 3 weeks post op, there is still some slight soreness at times, but mostly it's good to go.

I was sleeved on 3/19 and have a horrible burning type pain under one of my incisions. To the point that I walk hunched over and limp. I did notice that if I put pressure above the incision, that the pain isn't as bad. I'm hoping/thinking it's the muscle trying to heal. I have an appointment with my surgeon on Wednesday so I am going to bring it up to him.

Hey Butterfly Gal,

I started with the same type of burning sensation under one oy incisions today too! It hurts something nasty, doesn't it? I look forward to hearing what your doctor says.

I was sleeved march 13th. And I have the same pain. I asked about it when I went for my 1 week post op. he said it was my spleen shrinking. And that they cut blood vessels during surgery. And the spleen pain would go away in up to 6 weeks. Sorry your going through this I feel your pain.

Wow. It just amazes how different everyone's recovery is. What is this drainage thing everyone is talking about? Don't/didn't have one. I have 6 incisions because if some hernia work. None really hurt other than the big is in the normal fold when I bend over. Otherwise, 4 weeks post op and my incisions are just scars and no pain at all. I have been sleeping on my side and stomach since the hospital.

It's crazy to read all of these posts now since I'm 11 months out. I had the same pain and no one else did at the time. I couldn't understand why I was so different than everyone else. I was in pain for at least a month. The incision on my left side was so painful. I couldn't cough sneeze or laugh without it hurting something terribly. The best advice I can give you is to move around as much as you can without being in too much pain. I think I may have babied myself too much not knowing how much I should or shouldn't do, & was scared to hurt myself.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
