Long story... Anyone else been here?

Hi, I was sleeved January 9th, 2013. Everything seemed to be going well, I was struggling to get in all my Fluid and Protein but I was assured this was normal in the first few weeks and to keep working hard. At my one month post op I was talking to my surgeon about how exhausted I was. I was always tired and wanting to sleep. It was a struggle to even get up and take a shower. Also I was very dizzy and shaky. He asked if I was getting 1000 calories minimum a day and I laughed... No I wasn't, I couldn't even eat 2-4 oz of food and I was getting at most 400 calories a day. He went on to explain at this point I should be eating 8 oz per meal and getting 1000-1200 calories a day! What!? He then put me on a very high dose prednisone steroid for 7 days to see if I just had some residual post op swelling that could be preventing me to eat. He also wanted me to drink ensure (for more calories) and to eat higher calorie foods for that time frame as well. Might would've worked if I could get things in. Also I did not have any vomiting, only nausea when trying to stuff it all down. I still can't eat and I still feel awful. My body hurts all the time and I am having trouble everyday. Now my surgeon believes my sleeve could be "to tight" and he wants to perform an EGD and stretch out my stomach so I can handle eating more food. I'm hesitant... I know I need to be able to eat but I also don't want to fail before I've even started because of stretching the sleeve out. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

I was sleeves in 1/07! And have the same symptoms as you. I'm exhausted (thought I was anemic but my blood work came out fine) and struggling to get in my Protein and fluids. According to my doctor, everything inside could still be swollen up to 3 months and he advances the diet very slowly. I can barely get in 1 soft boiled egg and the Protein Shakes make me sick. I have heard of stretching the sleeve but it seems a bit early to do that.

I agree, I think it is a bit early but I'm not sure how much longer I can function like this. Also my surgeon said today he wants to set up an EGD to be done this week and he advised me to go to the ER for 2 liters of Fluid. This is so frustrating.

I think nearly everyone goes through that exhausted stage. Get onto some B Vitamins, that really gave me a boost. I really think your surgeon is expecting a bit much of you. I am just over 3 months out and I struggle to eat more than 600 calories each day. The most Protein I can eat at once is 2 1/2 ozs. If I go any higher I vomit. Neither my Surgeon or my Nut are concerned at this stage.

I think there should be a bigger focus on hydration therapy for the first few months, proactively instead of after people have issues... Like a weekly visit to the office?

I was sleeved on 1/10/2013. I am having an easy go at this. I am not saying to rub it in I was going to tell you what I eat and drink at this stage. I wake up and as I take my kido to school I start drinking the Isopure punch Protein 40g

(like Gatorade) with equal ice to drink about 10oz. I drink that all and wait thirty minutes then I eat a scrambled egg and 3 slices of turkey meat 12g protein. This will sometimes take me an hour to eat. I eat it slow and chew chew. I want to get all the protein in. Thirty minutes later I start working on the rest (10 more oz) of the Isopure Protein Drink before lunch. Usually lunch is one string cheese and 3 slices of turkey meat 10g protein. If I have finished the protein drink then I start drinking on the Vitamin Water. I have what ever the family has for dinner. Tonight is three bean turkey chili. 11g protein.

I am getting about 600 calories a day and 75 ish Proteins a day. I take two Flintstone Vitamins and two Calcium 600mg a day too (not at the same time) I take b/12 injections about every two weeks. This really helped with energy.

During all this I am walking as much as possible. I wear the fitbit tracker and that has helped to keep me moving. I am almost 6weeks and have lost 27 lbs. I hope this helps. I am not sure how I could get in 1000 calories. I do know that more protein and b/12 has helped my energy a lot. I also cannot drink cream shakes that is why I drink the Gatorade type drinks.< /p>

Just one small thing.. My Nut told me to only have Gatorade twice a week as the salt in it tends to cause Fluid retention.

Yes this is true. I don't drink Gatorade. I meant to say that I drink a drink that taste like Gatorade. I can't drink milky or shake drinks so I found the Isopure from GNC that is has 40g protien and it taste like a Gatorade without all the salt.

Sounds like you're doing great!! :)

As for your daughters cheer clinic... It's fine with me if she leaves early but I don't think I can say yes or no :P hehe

OMG how funny and strange at the same time. I have no idea how that got put in there. That was an email to her coach. Guess I better check that she got the email. ;) Guess I better start proofing before posting. I just found the edit button. Fixed. ;)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
