Hi Post-Opers, I was wondering if you could give me any info on who has had to have a blood transfusion during surgery, and how much blood( pints did you get. I'm debating if I should make the 1.5 he drive to donate my own blood - just in case. I just wasn't sure how often blood transfusions occur with this surgery. I'm only going to be able to do 1 pint, so I'm also not sure it's even worth it. Thanks for any info you have on this.

Sara

There is minimal blood loss, but everyone is different.

They are giving you this option? Where are you having this done? I would ask the Dr how often they have had to do transfusions ... that would be the real barometer.

I have never heard of doing a transfusion, but if there are complications ... have you had issues with previous surgeries?

I had to have two blood transfusions during the hospital stay after my vsg (patients are normally released the next day - I had surgery on a Monday and came home on Friday). My hematocrit dropped to 18 (normal red blood ct for women is in 36-45% range) so they assumed there was internal bleeding.

I had to wait it out a bit for it to climb until they released me. Initially there was talk of going back in to find out where the bleeding was happening - I am glad I did not have to go through that one. I did finally get to find out my blood type (type O negative - universal donor and a good band haha) which I had never known. I had 2 pints over 2 days.

I cant imagine you would need to give blood unless maybe you have a rare blood type - this is the situation with my mom (B negative) - the blood bank calls her once a week I think lol.

Btw, surgeon's office not pushing it at all. I found the info in my "pre-op binder" and started asking questions and just trying to set myself up for success. However, I'm thinking I might pass;)--needles=yuck!

I would do it if you have time. It's a good precaution and if not used then you donated blood for someone who might ... Win/Win

My friend needed a blood transfusion tho he had a hernia repair at the same time. I think its rare to need a transfusion, typically.

It's unusual, and the blood bank supply is extraordinarily safe. I wouldn't bother.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
