Calorie counting or protein counting?

Recommended Posts

Do you know if I should be focusing on keeping my calories below a certain number? I'm 4weeks out and I eat an avg of 700-850calories and I'm getting all my Protein Vitamins and Water in. I have been working out 5days a week for the last 2weeks. I feel like I'm eating more calories than others in my time frame but I feel like I am starving myself if I eat only 500 calories and burn 700 working out. Is there a right answer??? Thanks for your time!!!

You need to track both.

BTW, you are doing great if you are getting all of your hydration & Protein while staying under 800 calories. Even if you weren't exercising you would lose weight just doing that. Adding the physical aspect to it is expediting your loss.

500 calorie diets are very hard stay fully nourished on and really IMO should only be utilized in very short spurts.

Thanks OTR. I've just been torn with the different numbers I read and feel more energetic w 800 calories. This sleeve has made me feel crazy because ill eat 800 calories and think I over ate when in the grand scheme of it all I am under my goal for the day. I have lost 14in 4 weeks and I guess I felt the pounds weren't moving. Ill stay with my 800 vs 500. I am a lap-band to sleeve revision and AFTER the surgery my surgeon tells me I will lose slower and have less restriction because of the band history. Thanks for telling me after. But I think that's why I eat 800 at 4 weeks out.

My NUT has me counting both. She says I should be between 500-800 calories a day, but I feel weak at under 650. I'm almost 8 weeks out, but it's been like this for a while.

I made sure I got enough Protein. (still do) Didn't count calories (still don't)

Followed my post-op diet aka food plan.

Congrat on getting the lapband out (I HATED mine!)

My NUT stresses Protein & Water. I am usually around 800 cal per day, I have upped it to 1000 for a day or two when I stall and I feel THEN like I've over eaten - it usually works to get me back losing. Even at 1000, that is WAAAAAYYYY less than what I was eating before surgery.

and I know that the calories I'm taking in are much healthier calories than I was before. Stay the course, you will do great.

All of these posts are exactly what I needed to hear. On a day where I have had 900 (which is like twice and I was very active) I freak out but compared to old me its great.

Thanks guys! Ill keep it up

I've found that if I eat for my nutritional requirements (70 g protein) that my caloric intake is just naturally between 600-800 a day. Since hunger isn't really an issue, once I hit my Protein requirement, I'm generally done for the day as far as food goes. Don't worry about days where it may be higher, just keep in mind that as long as you're eating less than your body requires to live, you're going to lose weight. Most of us were eating well over 2500 calories a day to sustain our pre-op weight, and even at my worst post-op eat-lunch-out-with-a-little-dessert day, I doubt I've eaten over 1200 calories.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
