Louisiana - Dr Chu

Recommended Posts

I am looking for info from anyone who has used Dr Chu in Lafayette for a gastric sleeve. Any advise or warnings would be greatly appreciated. I was, originally, sent to her with nothing but praise and as I get closer to my surgery date have heard other people tell me horror stories. I know for certain that I want the sleeve, but, of course I want the best care possible for my future health. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

I have never heard of her but had mine done in baton rouge by dr. Dr andrew hargrooder and he is wonderful and actually trains british drs to do this procedure. You also stay one night in the hospital.

Thanks. I'm so confused right now. Went for my 1st visit and it was great, but not knowing anyone who personally has used her makes me nervous.

My Mother had a lapband placed by Dr Chu a couple of years ago. My mom was not happy with her but that's not saying too much because my mom is really something else. I can hardly go by just one side.

My mom is pretty noncompliant if you ask me. But she is alone and unhappy so I do uderstand.

She swears that Dr.Chu didn't put enough Fluid in the band and that's why she didn't loose more weight- not because everytime I'm home visiting she has sweets all over and ice cream in the freezer. As well as loading up on more sweets "For my husband and me "

All I will say is that my mom did not do well with her last two surgeries ( thyroid prior to lap band ) and she had major complications .

Dr. Chu handled the ones from her surgery very well .

I don't think my mom should have had that surgery , not because I was nonsupportive but because she almost died during the previous one.

Thats all I know . I'm sorry that I don't know more but Mom lives in Louisiana and I live Alaska.

Amy

I used Chu and have had a few friends use her, too. We all had the sleeve. I think she is an excellent doctor. I would have the procedure and use her again any day of the week. None of us had complications.

I've started the process for gastric sleeve surgery. Before starting the process, I was *certain* I'd go with Dr. Chu. When I began participating in this forum, I even listed her as my doctor. Well, that all changed. My mom shared with my brother that I was planning to have WLS. He's been a nurse for almost 25 years, and most of his career has been spent at OLOL where Dr. Chu has surgery privileges. He asked my mom who was doing my surgery. When she said she couldn't remember the name, he said, "Please tell me it's not Dr. Chu." I called my brother later that day to find out more. He told me she has a terrible reputation and even referred to some of her surgeries as "botched." The general consensus among nurses is that they wouldn't let her touch their dogs. Now, before that feedback from my brother, I had heard only wonderful things about Dr. Chu. I have friends who've had great success with her. However, I can't ignore what my brother told me.

I had my sleeve done by Dr. Borland in New Iberia, LA. I had a wonderful experience with him (if you are comfortable with an oupatient procedure.)

You see, that's the thing. I'm not too keen on this being an outpatient procedure. I'm very low-risk as I have zero health problems aside from my weight, but I can't help but think, "what IF?" Also, I want to be in the same town as my husband and small children and my mom who will be helping during recovery. But so glad to hear you had a good experience. I've heard great things about Dr. Borland. I'm feeling *pretty certain* that my insurance will deny me, and I know Borland has a more attractive cash price, so I may change my tune when it's all said and done!

I was also sleeved by Dr. Borland with very low risk factors. He was incredible. By the time I got to the hotel (rode easily in the car wearing my seatbelt and everything), he was there for my night time check in. I felt completely safe the whole time. It's definitely a personal decision, though! Good luck to you!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
