Gaining weight before surgery!

Recommended Posts

One of the office I go to will not touch you if you have not lost weight. You will be sent away. The place where I ultimately ended up having surgery (had nothing to do with weight gain or loss, I left for other reasons) puts you on a strict preop diet and they do expect you to lose weight. I don't know if they would turn you away or not but you are only putting yourself at risk.

Well today was my "Bari Boot Camp" and they were okay with the 14lb weight gain. They told me that I was weighed in on October 28th and since I have been dealing with denials for over 3 months they would let it go. Woot Woot, I actually dropped 4lbs since Sunday from dieting so I was happy. Sooo surgery is Monday!!!

No.. As long as you do your pre-op liquid diet like they want then you should be golden. I had some serious last meal syndrome. My first eval was in November and I was 233. By the time I had surgery in January I was at 250. I did my two week pre-op liquid diet and they said everything looked great.

That eases my mind...thank you!

Since I started this whole journey on Oct. 15, 2012, I have to consistently lose weight. If I gain any weight when I go to the pre-op appointment or even on the surgery day, they'll cancel the surgery then and there. Then I'd get to start alllllll over again. So I'm freaking out over that.

Did the insurance company tell you that?

No, it's just the way they do it here at mayo. It's part of their "program."

I was scheduled for VSG on 12/9. I went to see my surgeon today. I gained 10 lbs in the last 2 months. She said that's a program stop. And has postponed my surgery. I don't know how long it will be before ai can be re-scheduled. I'm going to a Bariatric center of excellence. I must go back to the diet Iron, nurse and counselor and be recommended by the team again. I'm devastated!

Oh goodie. I have Cigna . Love hearing having to fight with them over authorizations. But no the doctor shouldn't have to put it off. I actually just had my last pre op apt with my surgeon before my surgery and I have gained 10 lbs due to having surgery on my neck last month and wasn't able to do anything. He didn't say he would postpone or cancel surgery just to try to drop the weight which I assume once I start the liquid diet it will come right off

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
