Do you realize what progress we are making with each & every pound we lose? It is easy to lose perspective. I am down 52 pounds in 2 months & all I have been able to think is 190 or so more to go. At a family dinner tonight I was informed by my 7 year old nephew that he now weighs 46 pounds. He is proud of this as he is growing tall & strong! I picked him up & he was HEAVY. It made my back & shoulders hurt to hold him. He thought that I was being awfully silly since I really only pick up & carry around his youngest sister who is 2. All the kids got a good laugh. I just thought, "Dear Lord, I've lost 6 more pounds than this 7 year old child weighs". It was really eye opening to realize that this "small" amount of weight really effected my body. When I get to my goal weight I wonder if I'll feel like a feather...lol. Just some food for thought.

I know exactly what you mean. My goal is to lose about 145 pounds. I was down the weight of my 6 year old by the third or fourth month, I'm now past the weight of my 12 year old and by the end of it all, I'll have lost the weight of my wife.

Yes. This is very important. I have not lost as much weight in my first week or so as some people (I'm about 11 days post op) but I have to sit back and realize - I've lost about 22 pounds right before surgery and I need to bring my expectations into line with reality and appreciate my work this far.

this is very eye opening! I've lost the weight of a normal toddler! I have a 4 yr old grandson who is too heavy to carry around... and to think, I had been carrying that same amount of weight and more for over 20 years! EYE OPENING!!!

Thanks for bringing a new perspective...

I thought that when I lost 100 pounds I could jump 6 feet in the air like I was on the moon.

I tried it and I could!

Then I woke up.

Thanks for sharing. I'm pregnant and realized the other day how much trouble I was having moving around. Sure, some of it is that pregnancy awkwardness but a big part is that I'm up twenty one pounds.

That's not a lot of weight if you think of it in terms of one hundred or more pounds to lose. I mean, I remember being frustrated in the beginning when I'd "only" lost forty pounds.

But it impacts my ability to move and it wears me out. To think I used to carry 105 extra pounds on this body at one time, and didn't really even realize the impact.

Great post. People get too hung up on scale goals and forget quality of life and long term maintenance goals because they're distracted by the numbers.

22 lbs is my 2 year old niece. Awesome! Keep up the great work. No amount of loss is little & it adds up. Congrats!

I am finding that I have to bring my thinking into a different perspective to reinforce my work. No more comparing my rate of weight loss against others. Each of our journies is as unique as we are!

Lol. So maybe I won't be light enough for the wind to blow me around, but a girl can dream! :)

I couldn't agree more. Even with much more to lose ahead of me, my quality of life is getting better every day. It is truly amazing how we can get so heavy & still function. I am tired of numbers & comparing my journey with others. This is my life & I will Celebrate any healthy way I can. Soon I'll be down my nephew & a niece. Lol. Congratulations on your pregnancy. I wish you a happy & healthy pregnancy & the same for your new bundle of joy!

Thank you for a new perspective! I just realized last night that I had gotten up off of the sofa easily as opposed to the old way of huffing, heaving, puffing....it's easier to get in and out of the car, clothes are getting too big and I need to clean out my closet for the 2nd time since I started this journey. I still can't walk a long distance or do a long time on the exercise bike but those things will come also one of these days. So much to Celebrate (46 pounds total, 29 pounds since the surgery 12/26)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
