Here's my unusual story as to why I'm here

Well it sounds to me that in repairing your stomach he gave you the "sleeve"?

People having their stomach "sleeved" has happened for years for other reasons where the stomach is damaged and a portion had to be removed for whatever reason (cancer etc)

Could this be the case? That he had to take out part of your stomach? And in doing so he may have only had to take a small portion there for leaving a bigger sleeve than normal?

Sorry just me thinking out loud.. But I would talk to the Dr. About his reasonings.

I called him one day to discuss everything. I did ask him about the sleeve and he did the standard sleeve procedure on me. He didn't have to do the sleeve and only came out to tell my husband what was going on with the band since it had been 3 hrs instead of 1. He said that it was after discussion with my husband that he decided to do the sleeve. He said he wouldn't have done it if he didn't think it was safe. I do believe that. I'm adjusting to this life so at this point I'm just happy to be feeling better. I have to believe that all things happen for a reason.

Yeah like I said I was just thinking out loud on that theory.. :)

But if you do want to look on the bright side of things which is always good.

After reading so many horror stories about the band, (which I believe will be discontinued soon)

You most likely avoided the heartache that a lot of revisions do.

You can read many stories just on this site alone of people having their band out only then to have to wait for months on end to get the sleeve. Most of them, if not all, gain the majority of their weight back while waiting!

You had a opportunity not to have to go through that!

And that's pretty cool I think !

Good luck to you,

Laura

So sorry for your troubles. My surgeon almost always does conversion same day. He says to keep you from going under again. Just that we have to be extra vigilant. I was converted in summer and have been doing good other than bad reflux. But even with that I feel so much better and enjoy food better now. Yes I have lost very little weight but I have a better relationship with food :). ( too good ). The slow weight loss is common with low bmi ( I was 33). So I hope u find comfort here and you can always inbox any of us individuals if u need a shoulder to lean on.

That is quite a story. I think we all understand how upset you must be! I spent a long time researching and facing fears; you were robbed of that.

I do want to point out an upside or two though. That band had to go, and MOST people regain when that happens. So don't think of it as "not worth it for 40# " but rather as worth it to prevent a 100# regain.... I was very hungry and fought like crazy to keep from gaining in the 2.5 months between my band removal and sleeve.

It is hard at first but now I love my sleeve and living with it is no problem.

Thanks so much for the support. I am lucky that I didn't have to jump through any hoops or go under twice. My band had really stopped working due to slippage a year before it finally slipped to a critical point. I was always too filled then unfilled so I thought the band was definitely more hassle than what it was worth. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I had managed to keep the weight off pretty much from the habits of the band so it did help me a lot in realizing my portions were out of control. The thing I miss now is my carbs. It seems like if I eat anything sweet or crackers, even with calories under 1000 a day, I don't lose weight. I think those 2 weeks post-op where I dropped weight on mostly Protein Drinks really reset my metabolism. I'm used to calorie counting and fitting in things like baked Cheetos or a little chocolate on a daily basis but still losing weight. I finally started working out again so I'm hoping this will help if I eat some carbs from making my weight stall. I'm always going to wish that I never needed the band or the sleeve to get to this point. I think what's hard for me is that it's been almost 3 1/2 years since I got the band and was at my heaviest so I forgot how bad it was. I'm sure if i was at my heaviest now I would have felt differently about the surgery.

Wow! What a story!! I am glad to not have my band any more and am waiting anxiously to be sleeved but I have to admit that I am working on getting ready to emotionally handle the first few weeks of the sleeve that I know will be difficult! I can't imagine going through this without the time to become mentally prepared!! I wish you the best of luck!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
