Are you able to ever have a bite of cake, like at a party or whatev? Does anything "weird" happen? Lol

It depends on your sleeve's tolerance to bread, sugar or fat. Some can eat it with no problem. It makes others slime or throw up. I can eat something like cake or pie if I only have around 1 tablespoon of it. More than that and it makes me feel very ill. I'm 3.5 months out and used to live on sweets.

I would never have more than a single bite. The stomach is so small now that you don't have room for non-nutritious things. Once you eat your required Protein there shouldn't be much room left for carbs.

This is not me telling you to go ahead and do it but I'm able to have little bits. My birthdays just passed (I'm 2 months post op) and I had a tiny piece on my birthday. No nausea or problems. Almost wish I did have a problem so I would never want to try again lol (no not really. I'm thankful for no problems!) but alas my sleeve is basically made of titanium and has handled everything I've thrown at it like a trooper. My experience is not average however so yours may vary (my disclaimer lol)

Also want to add that for me personally I had this surgery to live a normal life. A lot of people will say things like 'Oh don't eat that, it's not on plan' but for me this isn't a 'plan' this is my life. I'm not saying to go crazy and cram a sheet cake down your throat, but I don't want to deprive myself. If its my birthday and I want to have a tiny sliver of cake I'm going to work it into my calories for the day and do so and NOT feel guilt. If this surgery guaranteed I could never do that again I never would have done it. Part of the reason I didn't do RNY. It's a life style and a balance- for me anyway. Everyone is different. That's how I justify eating something like cake on a special occasion, just incase anyone was waiting to wag their finger at me lol.

My birthday is coming up and I plan on enjoying it. Instead of a cake, I may try something different, like an Italian treat that has nuts or fruit instead of just sugar and fat, which don't agree with me anymore.

I agree that a few bites on a special occasion won't hurt as long as i can tolerate it. Balance is out goal! True that this is our life and not a diet! I am one week post op and no no sweet cravings at all! But for days i have been craving fries and today i am craving quiche!

I've tried it on several occasions, I mean I would've got the bypass if I wanted total restriction.

I was never a cake person but yeah, you should have no trouble post op. The previous posters are exactly right - how much you can handle will be up to your sleeve. And be warned that if you've been low-carbing you might have a reaction from too much sugar if it's a seriously sweet cake and frosting. So take it easy until you know how it will settle.

The idea is to get to the point where you know you can eat whatever you want, but you're capable of keeping it in moderation. food shouldn't control you - you should control your desire for food. So I frown upon abstaining completely from entire food groups, because in my opinion, that leads to binge and graze behavior, not to mention a feeling of deprivation when you're constantly denying yourself food. This is especially true in social situations where partaking is expected and you'll can feel out of place or resentful if you're not eating.

So, long story short: stop at a few bites and enjoy your cake. Odds are good you'll find it's not nearly as delightful as you remember, though. Try not to be too disappointed. :)

I bake cupcakes for a living (well- I'm a stay at home mom, but I bake for extra money). One of my best friends birthday was jan 5th and mine is Friday. I made red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing. I had one bite. No problems. I could have eaten more, but that bite satisfied my craving and it was fine. I'm with fallenangel- I had this surgery to lead a NORMAL life. A normal life means having a tiny piece of cake on occasion. I have three small kids and hope to have another in a year or two- I can't just live a life of I will NEVER eat such and such again!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
